Effects

1. It has a broad-spectrum anti-anaerobic and antiprotozoal effect. It is mainly used clinically to prevent and treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, such as respiratory tract, digestive tract, abdominal cavity and pelvic purulent infections, infections of skin soft tissue, bones and bone joints, and endocarditis, sepsis and meningitis caused by Bacteroides fragilis. In addition, it is also widely used to prevent and treat oral anaerobic infections.

The nitro group of this product is reduced to amino group in an anaerobic environment and exhibits anti-anaerobic effect, but is ineffective against aerobic bacteria or facultative aerobic bacteria. It has good antibacterial effect on the following anaerobic bacteria: ① Bacteroides, including Bacteroides fragilis; ② Fusobacterium; ② Clostridium, including Clostridium tetani; ④ some Eubacteria; ⑤ Peptococcus and Peptostreptococcus, etc.

Pharmacology and Toxicology

Metronidazole has a strong antibacterial effect on most anaerobic bacteria, but has no effect on aerobic bacteria and facultative anaerobes. Its bactericidal concentration is slightly higher than the inhibitory concentration. This product can inhibit the redox reaction of amoeba and break the nitrogen chain of protozoa. In vitro tests have shown that when the drug concentration is 1-2 mg/L, Entamoeba histolytica will undergo morphological changes in 6-20 hours and will be completely killed within 24 hours. When the concentration is 0.2 mg/L, Entamoeba histolytica can be killed within 72 hours. This product has a powerful effect of killing trichomonas, but its mechanism is unknown. It is carcinogenic to some animals.

Precautions

(1) Interference with diagnosis: The metabolites of this product can make urine dark red.

(2) For patients with existing liver disease, the dosage should be reduced. The drug should be discontinued if movement disorders or other central nervous system symptoms occur. Before repeating a course of treatment, a white blood cell count should be done. For patients with anaerobic infection and renal failure, the dosing interval should be extended from 8 hours to 12 hours.

(3) This product can inhibit alcohol metabolism. You should abstain from alcohol during medication. Drinking may cause abdominal pain, vomiting, headache and other symptoms.
