What happens if the tooth nerve is removed?

I believe many people have experienced toothache, which can be life-threatening. There are many reasons for toothache. In some serious cases, the dental nerve needs to be removed. Once the nerve is gone, the pain will be curbed. This method has very good results, but it also has disadvantages. After all, nerves cannot be damaged casually. So, what happens if the dental nerve is removed? Let’s take a look below.

The dental nerve is located in the pulp cavity and belongs to the trigeminal nerve. The trigeminal nerve is the fifth of the twelve pairs of cranial nerves and has three major branches. The first branch is the ophthalmic nerve, and the second and third branches are directly related to the teeth. There are two types of nerves in the dental pulp: one is the myelinated nerves that are responsible for the sensation of the teeth; the other is the unmyelinated nerves that are responsible for the contraction and dilation of the blood vessels in the dental pulp. The dental pulp lacks the sensory nerves to differentiate between hot and cold. The ability to withstand different stimuli such as pressure, chemicals, etc. When irritated, both cause pain from inflamed or damaged pulp. In addition, the dental nerve lacks the ability to locate, and patients with dental neuralgia often cannot point out the location of the diseased tooth themselves. When the pulp is inflamed, the pain will radiate to other parts along the direction of the nerves. Furthermore, the dental nerve is a sensory nerve, which only has the function of sensing pain but not the function of a motor nerve, so when the dental pulp is inflamed it will not cause crooked mouth symptoms.

1. Generally speaking, porcelain teeth do not cause much damage to the tooth. They only remove the enamel on the outside of the tooth and do not have a significant impact on the inside.

2. If we must say that extracting the dental nerve has any effect on the teeth, then the patient will not feel any pain, but the tooth will indeed become brittle.

3. As for the saying that you will lose the sense of cold and heat after the dental nerve is removed, it is pure nonsense. The dental pulp can only feel pain, not cold or heat. As for the normal feeling, cold and heat are felt by the periodontium, not the pulp.

4. Whether to choose orthodontics or porcelain restoration depends on the dentist. If your tooth is crooked, you can have orthodontics (of course, the possibility of tooth extraction and correction is not ruled out). However, if the tooth is discolored or rotten or decayed, orthodontics will be useless and porcelain restoration is usually performed.

5. When tooth decay reaches a certain extent, it will affect the dental pulp, causing unbearable pain, so the dental nerve has to be extracted to relieve the pain. Sometimes you need to be patient when extracting the tooth nerve, and you must fully understand the feeling of having no nerve. It means having no feeling at all, not just no pain. But if it is just one tooth, there will generally be no impact.

Generally speaking, if the toothache is severe, the doctor will recommend extracting the dental nerve. If the dental nerve is not extracted, the pain will become more severe and it is likely to affect the adjacent teeth in the future. Just extracting the dental nerve will not cause the entire row of teeth to lose sensation, so patients do not need to worry about this issue.
