It is Cistanche deserticola. So what is its function? Are there other medicinal materials in life? Next, I will explain them to you one by one.

1. Cistanche deserticola

Cistanche deserticola, also known as Black Siming, is said to be born from a wild horse spirit that fell to the ground. It looks like meat when it grows, and is flat and wide, with many flowers and delicious taste. The Cistanche deserticola in the north is shorter and has fewer flowers. The roots of Cistanche deserticola are dug up in March and April every year. The roots are about one foot long. Just cut the three or four inches in the center, then string them up with a rope, dry them in the shade, and they can be used in August.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Cistanche is sweet, slightly warm, non-toxic, and is the "desert ginseng" that helps men nourish the kidneys and strengthen their yang. It has the effects of nourishing the five internal organs, warming the waist and knees, growing muscles, greatly strengthening yang, nourishing the five internal organs, strengthening yin and benefiting essence and qi, replenishing the middle, and enhancing fertility. It is mainly used to treat male semen with blood, impotence, female yin loss and infertility, leucorrhea and genital pain.

There are two types of Cistanche deserticola: light Cistanche and salty Cistanche. The best light Cistanche is large and plump, with fine scales, gray-brown to dark-brown in color, high in oiliness, and fleshy and soft stems. The best salty Cistanche is black in color, glutinous in texture, with fine scales and thick stripes, and a flat and round body. It is generally believed that those produced in Inner Mongolia are the most famous.

Cynomorium songaricum is a herbaceous plant belonging to the succulent parasitic family. The roots of the white thorn plant that grows in the western Gobi and desert are its parasitic environment. Cynomorium songaricum will grow out from the ground in May and June every year and gradually mature in July and August.

Cynomorium songaricum is mainly distributed in Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia. Its main value is medicinal. There are written records of it as early as the pre-Qin period and it was widely used as a medicine in the Han Dynasty. Li Shizhen recorded in Compendium of Materia Medica: "It is sweet, warm and non-toxic. It greatly replenishes Yin Qi, improves essence and blood, and promotes bowel movements. It moisturizes dryness, nourishes tendons, and treats impotence."

Cynomorium songaricum is the most commonly used herb for kidney tonification. It can calm the liver and tonify the kidney, replenish essence and blood, moisten the intestines and promote bowel movements. It can treat infertility caused by insufficient qi and blood, strengthen muscles and bones, and supplement calcium. It has great benefits for human body functions; enhances immune function; scavenges free radicals; resists platelet aggregation; has glucocorticoid-like effects; and supplements vitamins and minerals. The latest scientific experiments have proved that Cynomorium songaricum also has the effects of preventing cancer, anti-virus and anti-aging.

According to different processing methods, Cynomorium songaricum can be divided into Cynomorium songaricum, wine Cynomorium songaricum, salt and wine-processed Cynomorium songaricum. It is forbidden to take this medicine if people have Yin deficiency and hyperactivity of fire, which leads to easy erection. People with spleen deficiency, diarrhea and constipation due to excess heat.

3. The difference between the two

Cistanche deserticola and Cynomorium songaricum are both perennial succulent herbaceous parasites. Both Cistanche and Cynomorium songaricum grow in the desert, and the best value of both are found in Alxa League, Inner Mongolia. However, Cistanche deserticola mainly parasitizes on the herb Haloxylon ammodendron, while Cynomorium songaricum mainly parasitizes on Nitraria tangutorum. The stems of Cistanche deserticola are yellow, while those of Cynomorium songaricum are dark purple or red.

Cistanche and Cynomorium songaricum have the same effects. They can nourish the kidney and strengthen yang, replenish essence and blood, and moisten the intestines and promote bowel movements. They can treat male impotence, premature ejaculation and spermatorrhea caused by kidney yang deficiency and insufficient essence and blood. Female infertility due to uterine cold, sore waist and knees, weak muscles and bones, constipation due to dry intestines, etc. In addition to their medicinal effects, they are also additives in the food, tobacco, alcohol and other industries.

But Cistanche deserticola is mild and nourishing, and it can warm the body without damaging the yin, hence the name Cistanche deserticola. Cistanche deserticola can be eaten for a long time, and its effect of moistening the intestines and nourishing blood is better than that of Cynomorium songaricum. The tonic effect of Cynomorium songaricum is stronger, and it has a greater effect in invigorating yang and improving essence, so it is suitable for short-term consumption. Its laxative effect is not as good as that of Cistanche deserticola, and its price is relatively cheap. Eating too much Cistanche will not cause internal heat, but eating too much Cynomorium songaricum will cause internal heat.
