1. Chinese medicine prescription

7 liters (21 grams) of Radix Ophiopogonis, 1 liter (3 grams) of Pinellia, 3 liang (9 grams) of Ginseng, 2 liang (6 grams) of Licorice, 3 he (15 grams) of Rice, 12 (4 pieces) of Red Dates

Take the above six ingredients, add 1 dou 2 liters of water, boil and take 6 liters. Take 1 liter while warm, three times a day and once at night. (Modern usage: decoct twice in water and drink warm).

IV. Explanation

This prescription is mainly used to treat pulmonary tuberculosis with deficiency-heat and cough.

Pulmonary emphysema is caused by weakness and withering of the lungs. There are two types: yin deficiency and internal heat and virtual fire.

Yin deficiency and internal heat leading to lung atrophy is caused by deficiency of Qi in the upper part of the body and severe coldness in the lungs. The main symptoms are spitting saliva without coughing, excessive saliva, dizziness, bedwetting, and frequent urination. It is treated with liquorice and dried ginger soup.

Deficiency-fire pulmonary consumption is caused by deficiency of the lungs with heat and poor distribution of body fluids, with coughing, spitting of turbid saliva and dry mouth as the main symptoms. It can be treated with Ophiopogon japonicus decoction.

Our prescription focuses on the damage of lung and stomach fluid and the ascending of virtual fire, so we emphasize Ophiopogon japonicus to nourish the yin of the lung and stomach; we use Panax ginseng, licorice, red dates, and rice to produce fluid and nourish yin, to loosen the soil and nourish gold; we use Pinellia ternata to reduce adverse effects, stop cough and resolve phlegm, because its pungent and dry nature can damage yin, so the dosage is light, and it is supplemented with a large dose of Ophiopogon japonicus, which can reduce lung qi deficiency without damaging the body's yin.

Our prescription is not only effective in treating deficiency-fire lung atrophy, but also in treating all symptoms of dry and dull body fluids, lung deficiency and heat, such as difficult-to-heal cough due to fatigue, vomiting due to stomach deficiency, indigestion due to dryness of body fluids, dry throat and weak wheezing after recovery from a serious illness, etc.

Wang, female, 36 years old, married, was diagnosed on April 8, 1982.

The patient had edema that came and went for more than two years. He had seen dozens of doctors, using methods such as "opening the ghost gate", "cleaning the palace", and "removing the old and rotten". He also took diuretic prescriptions such as Wuling Powder, Wupi Drink, Zhenwu Decoction, and Shuzao Yinzi, but there was no actual effect.

After a physical examination in a hospital, he was diagnosed with "chronic nephritis" and was treated with cortisone, cyclophosphamide, diuretic mixture, etc., but his edema still came and went.

The doctor-patient relationship was considered difficult, so they came to me for treatment.

Examination showed that the patient had swelling all over his body, bright eyelids, a pale face, red cheekbones, a dry and bad throat, and kept coughing up turbid foam. His tongue was dry and red, with little fluid and coating, and his pulse was deep, thin and slightly rapid.

A careful examination of this case revealed that the evolution of syndrome differentiation and treatment and the symptoms were quite similar to those of pulmonary emphysema in the Golden Chamber, so it was diagnosed as "pulmonary emphysema secondary to edema" (deficient fire type).
