Can a normal person have his small intestine removed?

The role of the human small intestine in the body cannot be ignored, because there is a layer of villi on the small intestine, and the main function of these villi is to absorb the main nutrients of the food that the human body eats into the stomach. If there is a disease problem in the small intestine, it will affect the normal absorption function, and the nutrition of the person cannot be absorbed well. But when the small intestine has a series of problems such as intestinal perforation, can the small intestine be removed?

What are the consequences of a 30% small intestine resection in a newborn?

1. If too much of the small intestine is removed and too little is left, you may get a disease called short bowel syndrome. This short bowel syndrome requires nutritional fluids to maintain.

2. The normal length of the small intestine of a newborn is 250cm-400cm. That is to say, if there are only 30 left, it is equivalent to cutting 3/4. That should have an impact in the future.

3. The impact is mainly on the digestion and absorption function. Even though some of it may be recovered with growth, the overall function will definitely be much worse.

How to care for newborns after small bowel resection

1. Closely monitor changes in the patient's condition . Due to the influence of anesthesia, the patient's own physiological characteristics and other factors, the patient's condition changes rapidly after surgery and should be closely monitored. After returning to the room, the patient was immediately asked to lie flat without a pillow, with the head tilted to one side, shoulders raised, oxygen inhaled through a mask, oral secretions cleared promptly, ECG monitoring, and continuous monitoring of changes in heart rate, respiration, and blood oxygen saturation until they were stable.

2. Keep warm. Because the newborn's ability to regulate body temperature is weaker than that of adults and they are exposed for a long time during surgery, the body temperature of the child often does not rise after surgery. Place an incubator after surgery with the temperature set at around 33°C. If the body temperature still does not rise after 1 hour, gradually adjust the temperature to 35°C. Check the body temperature every 15 to 30 minutes. When the body temperature rises above 36°C, gradually adjust the temperature to around 30°C.

3. Diet: The patient is prohibited from eating for 24 to 48 hours after the operation. A clear liquid diet shall be given thereafter. Breastfeeding shall be conducted after 72 hours. Pay attention to observe whether the child has nausea, vomiting, or abdominal distension after eating.

4. The underwear of newborns (including diapers) should be made of soft and absorbent cotton fabrics. It is best not to use chemical fibers or printed and dyed fabrics. The color of clothes should be light to facilitate the detection of dirt and prevent dyes from irritating the newborn's skin. Clothes should be as loose as possible, not hinder limb movements and easy to put on and take off. Because the newborn's head dissipates a lot of heat, a small hat should be worn when the climate is cold or the room temperature is low. The hat should also be soft and comfortable.

The small intestine itself can continue to develop, but removing too much small intestine at one time will still affect the absorption and physical development of the delicate newborn baby to some extent. If such a problem really arises, parents should not be overly immersed in negative emotions. Actively seek medical treatment and strictly care for the baby as required after the operation to alleviate the baby's pain to a great extent. However, newborns are not sensitive to pain, so this is a blessing in disguise.
