How long after taking Chinese patent medicine can I drink tea?

Tea contains tannic acid, caffeine, aminophylline and other ingredients. We generally do not advocate taking medicine with tea leaves or drinking tea right after taking medicine, no matter whether you are taking Chinese herbal medicine or medicine. Generally speaking, it is safest to wait until the drug is metabolized before drinking tea. However, the ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine are very complex, and we generally recommend drinking tea 2-3 hours after taking Chinese herbal medicine. For the general population, it is best to consult a Chinese medicine pharmacist about the operation methods of the medicine before taking it to ensure the efficacy of the medicine and reduce the side effects of the medicine.

The tannic acid in tea can react chemically with the protein, flavonoids or heavy metals in medicines to produce insoluble precipitates, which will reduce the absorption and efficacy of medicines. The caffeine, aminophylline and other ingredients in tea can directly stimulate the respiratory center and make the central nervous system excited. If the Chinese herbal medicine you take is a sedative, then drinking tea will counteract the sedative and hypnotic effects of the Chinese herbal medicine, thereby reducing the effects and even causing side effects.

There are many Chinese medicinal materials containing flavonoids. For example, ephedra contains ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, Phellodendron chinense and Scutellaria baicalensis both contain berberine, Stemona contains stemonaline, Corydalis yanhusuo and size thistle all contain flavonoids. You should not drink strong tea when taking these medicines. If you drink strong tea while taking some nourishing and health-preserving medicines, the efficacy of the medicine will be reduced.

Of course, this does not mean that you cannot drink tea while taking medicine. You can drink tea while taking the medicine. If you want to drink Qianghuo tea, you must swallow it with tea leaves.
