If there are fleshy bumps in the throat, it is likely to be pharyngeal papilloma. Pharyngeal papilloma is a relatively common disease and a benign tumor. Under normal circumstances, it will not cause great harm to the human body. However, since the throat is the main part for vocalization and eating, if there is discomfort here, it will inevitably affect a person's eating and vocalization. Therefore, if this symptom occurs, it must be treated in time. 1. Overview Pharyngeal papilloma is a common benign tumor of the pharynx and may be related to viral infection. The majority of cases are male and most are single. The squamous epithelium overgrows outward to form papillae, which are round or oval epithelial masses with loose, vascularized connective tissue in the center. 2. Causes It is a common benign tumor of the pharynx, which may be related to viral infection. It is formed by papillary protrusions of the skin or mucosal epithelium and its underlying connective tissue. 3. Clinical manifestations The tumors mostly occur in the palatine arch, tonsils, soft palate edge, and uvula, and are also seen on the back of the soft palate, the posterior wall of the hypopharynx, and the aryepiglottic folds. The surface of most tumors is sand-grained, small mushroom-shaped with a pedicle, and some are flat and mulberry-shaped without a pedicle and movable. They are light red or gray in color and soft in texture. The tumor is mostly a few millimeters in size, but some can reach several centimeters. Most patients have no subjective symptoms, or the symptoms are discovered during pharyngeal examination. A few may have dry throat, itching, foreign body sensation, etc. More serious cases may have swallowing and breathing discomfort or disorders. Most patients have a single lesion, but in children it can be diffuse or multiple. 4. Differential Diagnosis It needs to be differentiated from diseases such as pharyngeal fibroma, tonsillar polyps, and localized tonsillar tumor-like hyperplasia. 5. Treatment The main treatment is surgery. Depending on the condition, the tumor is removed by excision, clamping, shearing, laser, electrocautery, or freezing under surface anesthesia. Those located in the laryngopharynx can be removed under indirect laryngoscopy or direct laryngoscopy. The wound surface can be cauterized moderately to reduce the risk of recurrence. The prognosis of this disease is good, but it may recur, especially for those with multiple cases or accompanied by laryngeal papilloma, more attention should be paid. If malignant transformation is confirmed, treatment should be carried out according to the principles of malignant tumor surgery. |
