Infant colic

Infant colic

When it comes to newborns, many mothers actually don’t know how to take care of them, so sometimes when their babies keep crying, they don’t know what’s causing it. Especially when their own children suffer from colic, mothers do not know how to help their children relieve the symptoms and can only take them to the hospital for treatment. Today, we will introduce to you the basic situation of colic, and we hope that mothers will pay attention to learning.

What is neonatal colic

Strictly speaking, colic is not a disease; it is simply used to describe the condition in which a newborn baby cries incessantly. Some pediatricians define neonatal colic as a condition in which an otherwise healthy baby cries for three hours a day, three or more days a week, for more than three weeks. Therefore, when your baby at home shows suspicious symptoms, you can judge that the baby has colic.

Neonatal colic will not last forever. Generally, it will heal when the baby is 3-4 months old. However, this is definitely a very long process for parents. When a baby has neonatal colic, parents can take some measures to help the baby relieve it.

Causes of neonatal colic

Neonatal colic is a very common phenomenon in the growth and development of babies. So far, the cause of this phenomenon has not been found and the treatment method is also unclear. However, according to the research of experts and scholars, we can make the following analysis on the causes of neonatal colic:

1. The baby's neurological development is immature

Many tissues and organs of newborns are not fully developed, and the intestinal wall nerves are immature, which naturally leads to irregular intestinal peristalsis, with some parts being heavy and some parts being slow. When they are tangled together, spasms will occur.

2. Abdominal bloating

Newborns have some difficulty digesting food. Therefore, after consuming breast milk or formula milk, if the protein in it is not broken down and digested in time, it will cause the baby's stomach to become bloated. In addition, babies will swallow some air while crying, which can also cause bloating.

3. Emotional influence

Some experts believe that babies’ long-term crying is a form of emotional catharsis. Their nervous system can only perceive external stimulation but cannot distinguish it, so they can only express their emotions by crying.

Generally speaking, the baby's crying frequency will decrease after 3-4 months of development. This may be related to physical development, but the real reason still needs further research.
