Do I need to take anti-inflammatory drugs for root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment may be a very unfamiliar word to many people, but it is very familiar to people with radicular periodontitis. Root canal treatment is a treatment method for lesions of teeth, gums, roots, etc., but because there will be some damage to the gums during the operation and treatment process, many people think that root canal treatment requires the use of anti-inflammatory drugs to remove blood stasis and reduce inflammation, but in fact, does root canal treatment really require the use of anti-inflammatory drugs? Let’s take a look together below.

1. Root canal therapy is a treatment method that removes necrotic substances in the root canal, performs appropriate disinfection, and fills the root canal to remove the adverse stimulation of the root canal contents to the tissues around the root apex, prevent the occurrence of periapical lesions, or promote the healing of periapical lesions.

Guidance:

Because the necrotic tissue is sometimes not removed completely during the removal process, and a small amount of necrotic tissue still exists, which can continue to cause inflammation. Therefore, it is generally necessary to take anti-inflammatory drugs after root canal surgery. Metronidazole tablets are mainly aimed at anaerobic bacteria and are often used in oral diseases. Three days of use will not cause harm to the body, so there is no need to worry.

2. Metronidazole is used for various anaerobic infections, such as sepsis, osteomyelitis, abdominal infection, pelvic infection, lung and bronchial infection, pneumonia, sinusitis, skin cellulitis, periodontal infection and postoperative wound infection; the prerequisite is the treatment of anaerobic infection. Root canal treatment is prone to bacterial infection.

3. Metronidazole is an antibiotic that kills anaerobic bacteria and is suitable for anaerobic infections or diseases with potential anaerobic threats.

Guidance:

After root canal treatment, there is a possibility of anaerobic infection due to local hypoxia, so it is recommended to eat some to be safer.

4. Inflammation is what we usually call "inflammation". It is a basic pathological process dominated by defense response that occurs when biological tissues are stimulated by certain damaging factors such as trauma, infection, etc. The local manifestations of inflammation are redness, swelling, heat, pain and functional impairment, and are also accompanied by systemic reactions such as fever and changes in peripheral blood leukocyte counts. Normally, inflammation is beneficial and is the body's automatic defense response (although the patient may feel pain and other discomfort). But sometimes, inflammation can also be harmful, such as attacks on the body's own tissues, inflammation occurring in transparent tissues, and so on.

5. Steroids are a class of substances that are naturally synthesized by the body, commonly known as hormones, such as cortisone, hydrocortisone, dexamethasone, etc.

When used in medicine, glucocorticoids are the most common anti-inflammatory drugs.
