Burdock Side Effects

This product is the fruit of the burdock plant of the Asteraceae family. It is pungent, bitter and cold in nature. It enters the lung, liver and gallbladder meridians. It has the functions of extinguishing fire, evacuating wind, cold and heat, clearing the lungs and relieving rashes, removing toxins and relieving sore throat. It is used for wind-heat cold, cough with sputum, measles, rubella, sore throat, mumps, erysipelas, carbuncles and ulcers. Oral administration: Common dosage is 6~12g.

1. Excessive use of burdock seeds can cause breathing difficulties. Arctiin, the main component of burdock seed, has been shown in pharmacological experiments to cause central nervous system excitation. Excessive intake can cause convulsions, accelerated respiratory rate, and thus inhibit respiratory arrest.

2. Improper use of burdock will aggravate diarrhea. Burdock seeds contain oil, which is slippery and has a laxative effect. If used for people with qi deficiency and loose stools, it will aggravate diarrhea, so people with qi deficiency and loose stools should use it with caution.

3. Burdock allergy symptoms can cause discomfort in the human body. The main thing is that chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, skin rashes, and low blood pressure will occur 30 minutes after taking burdock seeds, but these are very rare situations.

4. Arctiin contained in burdock seeds can cause tonic convulsions in frogs, mice, and rabbits. Breathing becomes weak, random movement subsides, and eventually a state of numbness occurs, but the heart does not stop beating.

1. Side effects on the central nervous system: Pharmacological experiments have shown that arctiin, an ingredient of this product, can cause central nervous system excitation in animals. Excessive intake can cause convulsions, accelerated breathing, and thus respiratory depression.

2. Gastrointestinal side effects: Burdock seeds contain oil, which is slippery and has a laxative effect. If it is used for people with qi deficiency and loose stools, it will aggravate the diarrhea.

3. Allergic symptoms: Wu Shuzhong reported a case of allergic symptoms caused by burdock seeds. The patient was a 45-year-old female who had suffered from rheumatoid valvular heart disease for 5 years. Her symptoms improved significantly after taking Chinese herbal medicine. Later, he came to see the doctor because of discomfort and tightness in the left chest, itchy throat, sticky phlegm and constipation. His pulse was consistent, so I kept the original prescription, subtracted the cinnamon twig and the rhubarb, and added 15 grams of burdock seeds to be taken for soaking. About 30 minutes after taking the medicine, he felt chest tightness, shortness of breath, and a feeling of blockage in the throat, followed by dizziness and vomiting. Papules appeared on the skin and it was unbearable, so he was sent to the hospital outpatient department. Physical examination: blood pressure 12/8 kPa, pulse rate 110 bpm. Oxygen was given immediately and 40 ml of 50% glucose solution plus 5 mg of dexamethasone was injected intravenously. After 30 minutes, the symptoms gradually improved. The next day, the patient took the original prescription again, and the above reaction occurred again about 30 minutes after taking it. After anti-allergic treatment, the symptoms improved rapidly. The patient did not take other medications or protein-induced allergic foods. I then removed the burdock seeds from the original recipe and took it again, and no allergic symptoms occurred.
