Can ankylosing spondylitis be inherited?

The cause of ankylosing spondylitis is complex. The onset of ankylosing spondylitis is directly related to HLA-B27, that is, ankylosing spondylitis has the strongest correlation with human leukocyte antigen. Eighty percent of HLA-B27 positive people do not develop ankylosing spondylitis, while ten percent of ankylosing spondylitis patients are HLA-B27 negative.

Therefore, a positive HLA-B27 does not necessarily mean that ankylosing spondylitis will occur, and a negative HLA-B27 does not necessarily mean that ankylosing spondylitis will not occur. It is even more impossible to assume that a positive HLA-B27 means ankylosing spondylitis. It can be said with certainty that only a few people in the ankylosing spondylitis family will become ankylosing spondylitis patients, and most people will never develop the disease in their lifetime. The familial inheritance of ankylosing spondylitis has long been recognized by the medical community. When Kellgren conducted a survey of families with ankylosing spondylitis, he found that the average prevalence of the disease among family members of patients with the disease was four percent.
