Symptoms of pharyngoconjunctival fever

Symptoms of pharyngoconjunctival fever

Pharyngeal conjunctival fever is a relatively common symptom. Patients may experience swelling and pain in the throat. In this case, you need to go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment in time. Pay attention to a light diet and drink plenty of water. If the symptoms have not been relieved, you must undergo anti-inflammatory treatment. There may even be a risk of fever. If the body has a fever, physical cooling must be performed to avoid nerve damage. So, what are the symptoms of pharyngeal conjunctival fever?

1. Causes

Caused by adenovirus types 3, 4, and 7.

2. Clinical manifestations

The prodromal symptoms are general fatigue and body temperature rising to 38.3-40℃. Conscious tearing, red eyes and sore throat. The physical signs are follicular conjunctivitis, transient superficial punctate keratitis and corneal subepithelial opacities, and preauricular lymphadenopathy. The course of pharyngoconjunctival fever is about 10 days and is self-limited.

3. Inspection

Conjunctival scrapings showed a large number of mononuclear cells, but no bacteria grew in culture.

IV. Treatment

Since pharyngoconjunctival fever is a highly contagious disease caused by adenovirus infection, there is no specific medicine and it is self-limiting, supportive therapy is often adopted clinically. Eye drops containing dexamethasone are contraindicated in patients with superficial punctate keratitis or subepithelial corneal infiltration. Those with a body temperature >38.5℃ should actively reduce fever and, if necessary, receive fluid replacement to maintain water and electrolyte balance. For patients with elevated white blood cell counts, appropriate antibiotic treatment should be selected.

5. Prevention

Do not go to public places, swimming pools, etc. during the period of pharyngoconjunctival fever to reduce the chance of transmission. To prevent pharyngoconjunctival fever, the management and supervision of swimming pools should be strengthened, and the sanitation and disinfection system should be strictly implemented.

6. Differentiation from conjunctivitis

The commonly referred to "pink eye" is medically called acute conjunctivitis, which is caused by bacteria and manifests as redness and congestion of both eyes, especially with a lot of secretions, which will block the eyes and make them unable to open. It is more obvious when waking up in the early morning. In addition, "pink eye" rarely causes high fever. The main differences between pharyngocjunctival fever and "red eye" are the presence of high fever, unilateral ocular congestion, and the absence of significant ocular discharge.

VII. Disease course and prognosis

The natural course of pharyngeal conjunctival fever is about one week, and there are generally no sequelae. Knowing this, parents can avoid blind worry and don't have to give their children many antibiotics intravenously every day, because antibiotics will not shorten the course of the disease, and only reasonable treatment and care can speed up physical recovery. Make sure your child drinks plenty of water and eats light, easily digestible food. Supplementing with multiple vitamins and trace element zinc can help recovery from illness.
