Characteristics Identification Wolfsbane is the dried root of Wolfsbane chamaejasme, which is conical to oblong, slightly twisted, 7 to 30 cm long and 2 to 7 cm in diameter; the root head leaves the above-ground stem residue. The surface is dark brown to dark brown, with longitudinal wrinkles and gradually growing long and thin lenticels, and some have residual fine roots. After the plug falls off, the soft chemical fiber is exposed. It is light, tough and not easy to break. The central phloem in the cross section is reddish brown, while the outer phloem is white and fibrous. It has a slight smell and tastes slightly sweet, slightly bitter and spicy. 1. Euphorbia chamaejasminoides The dry roots are cylindrical, 4 to 7 cm in diameter, 0.5 to 3 cm thick, and occasionally up to 7 cm. The surface is yellow-brown or light dark brown. The cork is in overlapping sheets and easily falls off. The cross section is uneven, with prominent concha rings of dark brown and reddish brown. Lightweight, easy to break, flour-like, sticky after being soaked in water, and sticky threads can be seen when it is torn off. It has a slight odor, sweet taste, and a stimulating sweetness. 2. Euphorbia lunulata This root is similar to the root of Euphorbia stellariae, but the color of the ring pattern on the cross section is lighter and not as obvious as that of Euphorbia stellariae. The viscosity is not noticeable as a water liquid. 3. Main ingredients The roots of Stellera chamaejasme contain sterols, phenolic components, carbohydrates, triterpenes and harmful high molecular material citric acid. May also contain anthraquinone glycosides. Euphorbia chamaejasme: The roots contain 10.46% epoxy resin and 1% to 2% forced vulcanized rubber. 4. Function and efficacy A kind of wolfsbane glycoside was extracted from wolfsbane, which was originally called wolfsbane endotoxin. It is an antibacterial substance with very low toxic and side effects. Intragastric administration of 6g (raw drug)/kg of wolfsbane decoction can increase the pain threshold of mice by 20% to 50% (high-voltage electric shock to the mouse tail method and heating plate method). The leaves and roots may contain anthraquinone glycosides, which can improve gastrointestinal function and treat constipation. |
