What is peripheral nerve injury?

What is peripheral nerve damage? Many friends will have this question when they first hear the name of this disease. In fact, this disease is quite common in our lives, but we often ignore it, which is why we feel unfamiliar when we first hear the name of this disease. Let’s take a detailed look at it in this article.

Experts say that although peripheral nerve injury is not difficult to treat, we need to have a detailed understanding of its cause, time, and location of the disease so that we can achieve the best results during treatment, and the more detailed the better. Peripheral nerve damage is mainly caused by trauma, birth trauma, bone abnormalities, lead and alcohol poisoning, etc., which cause sensory disorders, movement disorders and nutritional disorders in the areas innervated by the nerves. Peripheral nerves are nerves outside the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It includes 12 pairs of cranial nerves, 31 pairs of spinal nerves and autonomic nerves (sympathetic nerves and parasympathetic nerves).

Causes of peripheral nerve damage can be divided into :

1.Stretch injury. Such as brachial plexus injury caused by birth trauma.

2. Cutting wounds. Such as knife cuts, electric saw cuts, glass cuts, etc.

3. Compression injury. Such as nerve compression caused by fractures and dislocations.

4. Firearm injuries. Such as gunshot wounds and shrapnel wounds.

5. Ischemic injury. The limbs are ischemic and contracted, and the nerves are also damaged.

6. Electrical burns and radiation burns.

7. Drug injection injuries and other iatrogenic injuries.

TCM treatment of peripheral nerve injury :

1. Relieve the pressure on the fracture ends: Nerve damage caused by fractures is mostly compressive injury. Non-surgical treatment should be used first to reduce and fix the fracture externally to relieve the pressure on the nerves from the fracture ends.

2. Prevent overstretching of paralyzed muscles.

3. Maintain joint mobility to prevent deformities caused by muscle imbalance. Ulnar nerve paralysis causes claw fingering.

Through the above introduction, I believe you must know what peripheral nerve injury is. Here we also remind you that the key to such diseases is prevention. So pay attention to protecting yourself in normal times and don’t let yourself get hurt. This can prevent peripheral nerve injury from occurring. If you suffer from this disease, timely treatment is the most critical.
