Angelica is the dried root of the Angelica sinensis plant of the Umbelliferae family. Warm in nature, sweet and spicy in taste. Angelica sinensis enters the heart and spleen meridians. It has the effects of nourishing blood and activating blood circulation, regulating menstruation and relieving pain, and moistening the intestines and promoting bowel movements. It is used for blood deficiency, chlorosis, dizziness and palpitations, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, rheumatic pain, and injuries from falls. As early as more than two thousand years ago, the ancient Chinese people had used it to treat diseases. To this day, angelica is still widely used in clinical practice, and there is a saying that nine out of ten prescriptions contain angelica.

[Chemical composition]

1. Volatile oil part The volatile oil content in angelica can reach 0.2%-0.4%. The volatile oil consists of three parts: acidic, phenolic and neutral, with contents of 5.88%, 3.46% and 90.4% respectively. The content of ligusticolide in the volatile oil is the highest, about 45%, and n-butenolide accounts for about 11.3%, which has a unique aroma.

2. The water-soluble part of angelica contains ferulic acid, succinic acid, niacin, uracil, adenine, stigmasterol, D-glucoside, tetradecanol-1, vanillic acid, and gelsemium fluorescein.

Angelica contains angelica polysaccharides, which account for about 8.5% of the dry raw medicine, and also contains glucose.

Angelica contains a variety of amino acids, with a total content of 6.5%. The content of arginine is about twice as high as other amino acids. Angelica also contains vitamin B12, the content of which is 0.25-0.4 mg/100g, vitamin A substance (the content of vitamin A is 0.0675%) and vitamin E, etc.

The inorganic elements contained in angelica include Na, K, Ca, Mg, Si, Al, P, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu (Zn/Cu ratio is about 3:1), as well as Mo, Sn, As, Se, Co, Ti and Sr. In addition to the above elements, it has been reported that angelica also contains B, Cr, Ni, Ba, Re and V.

Angelica sinensis has few adverse reactions in clinical application. Some patients experienced skin itching and stomach discomfort after taking the medicine, but they were all mild. When angelica volatile oil is injected into acupuncture points, there will be severe pain that lasts for about 1 hour, and there are common reactions such as fever, chills, headache, dry mouth, nausea, etc., which can be relieved without treatment. Intravenous infusion of Angelica sinensis occasionally causes infusion reactions. There has been a report of a case of anaphylactic shock following acupuncture injection of compound angelica injection.
