The efficacy, effects and contraindications of Pinellia

What are the effects, functions and contraindications of Pinellia ternata? Let us take a good look at what Pinellia ternata is. Pinellia ternata is a traditional Chinese medicine. It can be used to treat or assist in the treatment of many diseases, so we must recognize and understand the effects of Pinellia ternata. However, drugs also have their side effects, so we must also understand and know what are the contraindications in the use of Pinellia that we should pay special attention to.

The effects of Pinellia are very powerful. We know that Pinellia has high medicinal value. It can lower our blood pressure, fight tumors, and has the effect of preventing and treating cancer. It can relieve cough and reduce phlegm, which is beneficial to our respiratory system. Pinellia can resist blood coagulation, which is beneficial to our circulatory system.

Anti-early pregnancy effect

Pinellia protein is considered to be the effective ingredient or one of the effective ingredients in Pinellia for preventing early pregnancy. When 250 μg of Pinellia protein was injected subcutaneously into pregnant mice on day 7, 50% of the mice had miscarriages, and no mice died. 30 mg/kg of Pinellia protein has a significant anti-early pregnancy effect on mice, with an anti-early pregnancy rate of up to 100%. Within 24 hours of administration, it can be seen that the plasma progesterone level decreased, the endometrium became thinner, and the embryo stopped developing. Direct injection of Pinellia protein into the uterine horn can produce a significant anti-rabbit blastocyst implantation effect. With an injection of 500 μg, the anti-implantation rate reaches 100%. The localization of Pinellia ternata protein labeled with horseradish peroxidase showed that the protein was bound to the epithelial cell membrane of endometrial glandular ducts. Pinellia protein can bind to mannan, and its anti-implantation effect may be due to the fact that the protein binds to certain sugar structures on the mother and (or) daughter cell membranes, changing the biological behavior of the cell membrane.

Sedative and hypnotic effects

Gavage of 75% ethanol extract of Pinellia ternata to mice can significantly prolong the latency period of the mice's tail-flicking reaction to thermal pain stimulation and reduce the number of mice's twisting reactions caused by acetic acid. In the experiments on the effects of sodium amobarbital on the spontaneous activities of mice and the hypnotic effect of raw pinellia, there were very significant differences between the experimental group and the control group (P<0.01).

Inhibition of trypsin

Pinellia trypsin inhibitor only inhibits the hydrolysis of amides, esters, hemoglobin and casein by trypsin, but cannot inhibit the hydrolysis of their respective substrates by chymosin, bradykallikrein, subtilisin and papain. The mass inhibition ratios of the inhibitor on the hydrolysis of amide, ester, hemoglobin and casein by porcine trypsin were 1:0.71, 1:0.88, 1:0.71 and 1:0.71, respectively. Judging from the range of chemical molecular sizes, Pinellia trypsin inhibitor should be classified as a large molecule inhibitor.

Inhibits glandular secretion

Intraperitoneal injection of Pinellia preparations has a significant inhibitory effect on saliva secretion caused by pilocarpine. There are also reports that when the decoction is taken orally, saliva secretion first increases and then decreases.

Toxic side effects

Modern Chinese medicine pharmacology research shows that within the general clinical dosage range, the combination of Pinellia ternata with Chuanwu, Caowu or Aconitum will not increase toxicity or reduce efficacy, but it still needs to be cautious in clinical application to avoid adverse reactions. Pinellia ternata is neurotoxic. The precipitate of its water-soluble components after adding lead acetate contains substances that cause skeletal muscle spasms in frogs and mice and dilate the frog's pupils; the filtrate contains substances that cause central and curare-like skeletal muscle relaxation in frogs. Accidentally ingesting even a small amount of raw pinellia can cause poisoning, so raw pinellia is managed as a toxic Chinese medicine and needs to be processed before clinical use. In addition, Pinellia ternata has strong irritation to local mucous membranes, nephrotoxicity, embryotoxicity, and teratogenicity.

Above, we introduced what Pinellia ternata is. Pinellia ternata is actually a kind of traditional Chinese medicine. We also introduced the effects and functions of Pinellia ternata. The effects of Pinellia ternata are very comprehensive. Pinellia ternata is helpful to our body's respiratory system, circulatory system, and digestive system. There are also contraindications in the use of Pinellia ternata. We must know them when using them and use them with caution.
