Nursing care for patients with fractures

Nursing care for patients with fractures

Some intense exercise, an unexpected car accident and other accidents can easily induce the occurrence of fractures. As the saying goes, it takes three hundred days to heal a broken bone. It can be seen that fractures are not minor injuries that can be treated easily. Since the fractured part cannot move, for some patients with leg fractures, their care requires extra care from their family members so that they can recover smoothly.

Due to the particularity of fractures, the diet of fracture patients in daily life also needs to be paid attention to. Some foods that are not conducive to bone healing are prohibited for fracture patients during the fracture period. So, what foods are taboo in the care of fracture patients?

(1) Avoid blindly supplementing calcium. Calcium is an important raw material for the formation of bones. Some people believe that supplementing more calcium after a fracture can accelerate the healing of broken bones. However, scientific research has found that increasing calcium intake does not accelerate the healing of broken bones, and for patients with fractures who are bedridden for a long time, there is a potential risk of increased blood calcium and a decrease in blood phosphorus. This is due to long-term bed rest, which on the one hand inhibits the absorption and utilization of calcium, and on the other hand increases the reabsorption of calcium by the renal tubules. Therefore, for patients with fractures, there is no lack of calcium in the body. As long as they strengthen functional exercises and move as early as possible according to their condition and the doctor's instructions, they can promote the bone's absorption and utilization of calcium and accelerate the healing of broken bones. Especially for patients who are bedridden after a fracture, blindly supplementing calcium is of no benefit and may even be harmful.

(2) Avoid eating too much meat and bones. Some people believe that eating more meat and bones after a fracture can help the fracture heal earlier. In fact, this is not the case. Modern medicine has proved through many practices that if patients with fractures eat more meat and bones, it will not only fail to heal early, but will delay the healing time of the fracture. The reason is that the regeneration of bones after injury mainly depends on the function of periosteum and bone marrow, and periosteum and bone marrow can play a better role only under the condition of increasing collagen, and the main components of meat bones are phosphorus and calcium. If consumed in large quantities after a fracture, it will increase the inorganic content in the bone, leading to an imbalance in the proportion of organic matter in the bone, thus hindering the early healing of the fracture. But fresh meat and bone soup is delicious and can stimulate appetite, so it is okay to eat less.

The above are some dietary taboos that everyone should avoid when caring for fracture patients. I hope that everyone can consider the health of fracture patients and try to avoid the foods mentioned in this article in their diet that are not conducive to the early recovery of fracture patients. At the same time, I wish the fracture patients a speedy recovery.
