The relationship between Yin and Yang is not equal. Yang is the primary energy, and Yang is the master while Yin is the follower. The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine emphasizes that "the key to yin and yang is that yang is solid." The failure of yang to spread allows yin and cold to condense, which is the basic cause and pathogenesis of tumors.

The amount of yang energy a person has depends on the spleen and stomach. Although Yuan Yang is stored in the kidneys, it needs nourishment from the spleen and stomach. The movement of vital energy up and down, in and out also depends on the ability of the spleen to raise and the stomach to descend.

If we compare Chinese and Western medicine, the function of the Western medicine's immune system can roughly correspond to the spleen in Chinese medicine. It is generally acknowledged that the immune system is the body's last line of defense against tumors. In other words, a weak spleen and stomach is a physical condition that is prone to tumors.

2. Cold and dampness are the main causes of the disease.

Among those that damage the body's Yang Qi, cold and dampness are the most serious evils, and damaged Yang Qi can easily lead to Yin syndrome. The Suwen (Suwen) states:

"Cold qi invades the small intestine membrane and blood vessels, causing the blood to weep and not flow into the large meridians. Blood and qi are retained and cannot flow, so over time, a disease will develop."

It has been clearly stated that "accumulation is caused by cold." The New Formation of Eight Arrays in the Complete Book of Jingyue says:

“As for the diseases caused by cold, there are some that are caused by the evil cold invading the skin surface, some that are caused by the coldness of life and death damaging the spleen and stomach, and some that are caused by the coldness of the yin in the internal organs. These are all external colds that arise from nowhere and without any sound. At first, there is no sense of them and it is difficult to determine their cause.”

Zhang Jingyue summarized the causes of cold and said: "It may be due to constitution or due to failure, which leads to insufficient Yang Qi, and cold is often generated from it." The body's body fluids, essence and blood can only circulate with the promotion of Yang Qi. If cold and dampness damage Yang, the circulation of body fluids, essence and blood will be slow or even stagnant, which can easily lead to tangible evils such as blood stasis, phlegm and dampness, and food accumulation.

Tangible evil will hinder the flow of Qi, forming a vicious cycle. Therefore, in addition to the many symptoms of the tumor itself, most cancer patients show no thirst, or do not want to drink when thirsty, or like hot drinks, cold hands and feet, clear and long urine, loose stools, pale or dark purple tongue, enlarged tongue, greasy and moist white tongue coating, deep and thin or tight and hard pulse, etc., which are all signs of yang deficiency and yin excess.

Some cancer patients experience symptoms such as thirst, fever, aversion to heat, preference for cold food, persistent high fever or low-grade fever. These are false fever or superficial fever, and cannot be used as the only evidence for syndrome differentiation and medication, and cold medicines should not be used arbitrarily.

This false heat originates from true cold. Cold causes contraction and blocks the Qi movement. The rise and fall of Qi, its entry and exit are blocked, and it becomes stagnant and turns into heat. Using cold medicine to clear away heat at this time will only make the situation worse, which violates the principle of distinguishing the real from the fake.

"One must ask: if one has been rich and then poor, although not possessed by evil spirits, the disease originates from within, which is called loss of vitality. If one has been rich and then poor, it is called loss of essence, which is caused by the lingering of the five qi, and the disease is complicated."

The Treatise on the Origin and Symptoms of Various Diseases says:

“Although the five types of choking have five names, they are all caused by the disharmony of yin and yang…caused by worry, anger, and wrath.”

He also said: "Worry and anger will cause qi to stagnate. If qi is stagnant, it is not suitable to be released, otherwise it will cause choking."

The Waitai Mi says:

"The five diseases (referring to the five diaphragms) have the same medicine, and they are often caused by worry and anxiety."

Xue Lizhai's "Essence of Surgery" believes that the development of sarcoma begins with "stagnation and damage to the spleen."

According to our understanding of cancer patients, most of them have been stimulated by emotional events. Some patients have good results after treatment, but their condition is aggravated due to mental stimulation. Worry and anger can cause qi stagnation, and qi stagnation can block the flow of Yang Qi. The blockage of Yang Qi will affect certain organs and meridians, and that is where the tumor may occur.
