What is the reason why children feel nausea and vomiting when they smell strange odors?

Vomiting is a common phenomenon in our lives. Generally, occasional vomiting is not a big problem, but frequent vomiting needs attention. So what is the reason for frequent vomiting in children?

1. Physiological vomiting

Because the esophagus of newborns is relatively short and the beginning of the greater curvature of the stomach is horizontal, feeding too fast or too slow or holding the bottle horizontally can cause excessive air swallowing and vomiting.

2. Infection factors

Newborns are susceptible to infection, and vomiting may be the first symptom. Intestinal infections can cause vomiting. Extra-intestinal infections, such as upper respiratory tract infection, pneumonia, omphalitis, skin infection, meningitis, pyelonephritis, sepsis, etc., can also cause reflex digestive dysfunction and vomiting. Therefore, if parents suspect this is the cause, they should carefully observe whether the baby has other symptoms besides vomiting.

3. Congenital factors of the digestive tract

Vomiting is the main symptom of this disease, but the time of vomiting and the content of vomiting vary depending on the location of the lesion:

1. Esophageal vomiting

This type of vomiting occurs when milk is vomited back up in the esophagus before it enters the stomach. There are no signs before vomiting, and vomiting often occurs before finishing the milk. Since the vomited milk does not enter the stomach, it does not contain milk lumps, is not mixed with stomach acid, and has no sour smell. It is common in vomiting caused by esophageal atresia, pyloric relaxation and cardiac spasm.

2. Gastric vomiting

This type of vomiting is when food enters the stomach and is then vomited out of the stomach. Vomiting is preceded by nausea. The child is restless and the stomach contents contain gastric juice, so they have a sour and smelly smell. Diseases such as congenital pyloric hypertrophic stenosis and gastric volvulus.

3. Small intestinal vomiting

Vomiting is caused by intestinal obstruction due to stenosis or compression of the small intestine. If the lesion is at the upper end of the small intestine, such as obstruction in the duodenum, the child will often have upper abdominal distension, and vomiting often occurs after the distension. In addition to milk, the vomit also contains yellow-green bile. If obstruction occurs at the lower end of the small intestine, such as the ileocecal valve, the child's abdominal distension is not limited to the upper abdomen, but also includes distension in the middle abdomen. Vomiting occurs later and contains bile.

4. Colonic vomiting

Vomiting is caused by obstruction in the large intestine. Vomiting caused by Hirschsprung's disease and rectal atresia belongs to this category. The first symptom of children with Hirschsprung's disease is constipation. They only have bowel movements once every few days, and the stools are very smelly. As the patient could not defecate, the abdominal distension became more and more severe, the abdominal skin became shiny and thin, and vomiting followed. In addition to milk and bile, vomitus may also include feces. The patient had rectal atresia and had not passed meconium since birth, followed by abdominal distension and frequent vomiting.
