What is facial paralysis? What are the early symptoms of facial paralysis?

In life, many people do not understand the pathological mechanism of facial paralysis very well, but they all know the harmfulness of facial paralysis. Many people know that facial paralysis will affect a person’s facial image. So what are the early symptoms of facial paralysis?

1. Eyeball sign

Patients with facial paralysis will have the eyeball sign, which means that the two eyeballs of the patient will not be on the same horizontal line. The paralyzed side will be higher than the healthy side. It can also be found that the pupil of the affected side will also be above the horizontal line of the healthy side, which is also a symptom of facial paralysis.

2. Lacrimal gland secretion disorder

Patients with facial paralysis will have tear gland secretion disorders. The tear gland on the side with paralyzed facial nerves will secrete too few tears, or even have symptoms of dryness, but the other side can secrete tears normally.

3. Eyelash sign

A very important symptom of early facial paralysis is to advise the patient to close his eyes forcefully. When a normal person closes his eyes forcefully, his eyelashes are mostly buried between the upper and lower eyelids. When the facial nerve is paralyzed, the eyelashes are exposed, especially in the case of mild paralysis. If you close your eyes tightly, the asymmetry of the eyelashes is not obvious at first, but after a short period of time, the eyelashes on the mildly paralyzed side will slowly become visible. This is called a positive eyelash sign.

4. Blinking movement

Careful observation of the patient's blinking revealed bilateral asymmetry of the blinking movements, a phenomenon of considerable significance. If the patient is told to blink, the blinking movement will be slow and incomplete on the mildly paralyzed side.

5. Reflex symptoms

The main symptoms of facial paralysis include reflex symptoms, especially due to paralysis of the facial nerve. The paralyzed side often has facial paralysis symptoms such as low threat blink reflex, visual reflex, orbicularis oculi reflex, and orbicularis oris reflex.
