We have to admit that some parts of our body are indeed "untouchable". Yet sudden, intense pain has a very useful function: It’s a warning, a protective biological signal that tells you better stop doing whatever stupid thing you’re doing—whether you’re doing it intentionally or not.

1. Bit your tongue.

The pain is particularly noticeable when you accidentally bite the tip of your tongue or the muscles on the sides of your tongue. Dr. Brian Kanter, a New York dentist, said: The three strongest muscles in the human body are located in the mouth, including the masseter muscle, temporalis muscle and medial pterygoid muscle. These muscles can drive the teeth to bite, exerting a force of 22 kg and more than 90 kg on the incisors and molars at the back respectively. If the bite is severe, there is a possibility of "biting the tongue to commit suicide" due to blood loss from the lingual artery. Of course, in most cases it will only make people cry in pain. When the tongue is bleeding, you should first use some gauze to press and stop the bleeding, and secondly try to use the tip of the tongue to press against the upper palate to stop the bleeding. You can also use some ice cubes to reduce infection, and then rinse your mouth with salt water to kill bacteria and speed up the healing process.

2. Leg cramps.

Cramps can occur for a variety of reasons, including dehydration, fatigue, nerve damage, or a disruption in the balance of electrolytes in the body. Aaron Huppert, a physical therapist in New York, says that when the calf muscles contract sharply, they pull on the tendon nodes (the place where the tendon connects to the muscle), which makes it more painful. When you have a cramp, you should first use your hands to apply strong pressure directly to the muscles to release the contracted muscles. Once the cramping symptoms disappear, stretch the muscles in the opposite direction immediately to prevent cramping again.

3. Hit the elbow joint.

When you touch the most prominent bone of the elbow joint, you will feel a tingling pain. Dr. Joseph Helena, associate professor of rehabilitation at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, points out that the pain actually comes mainly from the ulnar nerve (a branch of the brachial plexus of the spinal nerves that runs from the inside of the arm to the wrist). When the arm is bent, these nerves become prominent, protected only by skin and fat. If you bump into something, you can relieve the pain by shaking your arms continuously.

4. Kick your toes.

Dr. Helena said that the toes are densely populated with nerves and lack fat tissue and muscles. When the toe hits a hard object, not only can it not bend, but it also has to bear the impact force of the entire leg. The full force is applied to a very small sensitive area, and the pain is self-evident. It is generally recommended to massage the painful area immediately to create a soothing feeling, distract yourself, and prevent too many pain signals from being transmitted to the brain, so that the pain will subside quickly.

5. Being scratched by paper.

The sharp sides of the paper can cut your skin. Dr. Mark Moyad of the University of Michigan Medical Center said that fingertips have more nerve fibers than most areas of the body, and once the epidermis is scratched, the sensitive nerve endings will be exposed to the air, causing severe pain. After a scratch, you should immediately rinse the wound with ice water and then wash your hands with soap to prevent infection. If the wound is deeper, apply ice for 3 minutes to numb the pain, then cover it with a Band-Aid.
