What can amniocentesis detect?

Amniocentesis is a test that some pregnant women may undergo during prenatal checkups. In fact, the main purpose of amniocentesis is to understand whether the fetus is in distress. It can also identify sexually transmitted diseases in the fetus and understand whether the fetus has malformations.

1. Check whether the fetus is in distress

During the delivery process, the fetus may become distressed due to prolonged delivery, lack of oxygen or compression. If amniocentesis is performed, abnormal conditions can be detected as early as possible and treated in a timely manner.

2. Identify the sex of the fetus

This technology determines the gender by analyzing the conditions of amniotic fluid, such as chromosomes or secretions. It is simple, convenient and has a relatively high accuracy rate.

3. Check whether the fetus is deformed

This technology can diagnose whether the unborn baby has organ malformations, such as neural tube defects, genetic diseases or chromosomal abnormalities.

4. Check the growth and development of the fetus

When you need to understand the specific growth of the fetus or want to clarify the due date, you can also use this technology to understand the fetus through amniotic fluid.

5. Risks of amniocentesis

Although this technology is a viable method for diagnosing various conditions before women give birth, it has the following possible dangers or risks because it is potentially traumatic to pregnant women and fetuses:

1.Puncture failed. During the operation, the operation may fail due to the expectant mother's own reasons, such as abnormalities of the abdomen and uterus, less amniotic fluid in the abdomen, and the placenta is located on the front wall.

2. Difficult to diagnose. Although this surgery is very helpful for prenatal diagnosis, due to the limitations of medical technology, various analyses of amniotic fluid may not be able to make accurate prenatal judgments. Therefore, this method requires other related projects to assist in diagnosis.

3. Intrauterine infection. If the expectant mother is at risk of infection before the operation or if cleaning and hygiene are not done in time after amniocentesis, intrauterine infection may occur.
