What causes vertigo? This reason is the key

When I sat down and stood up again, I suddenly felt dizzy and felt very uncomfortable. Professionals say that this is vertigo, which is mainly caused by adverse factors such as emotions, diet, physical weakness, old age, falls and injuries.

The main causes of vertigo include emotions, diet, physical weakness, old age, falls and trauma. The disease has two types, deficiency and excess, with deficiency being the majority. For example, yin deficiency can easily lead to internal liver wind movement, blood deficiency can cause the brain to lose nourishment, and essence deficiency can lead to insufficient marrow, all of which can lead to dizziness. If this is true, the dizziness is mostly caused by the accumulation of phlegm or the upward movement of fire.

1. Emotional indiscipline

Excessive depression and anger can cause the liver to lose its normal function, causing liver qi to stagnate, which can turn into fire, damaging the liver yin, causing wind and yang to become easily agitated, disturbing the head and causing dizziness. As stated in the book “Dizziness” in Lei Zheng Zhi Cai, “The liver and gallbladder are the organs of wind and wood, and the fire of the phase resides inside them. Their nature is active and ascending. It may be caused by excessive physical and mental activity, or by emotional depression, or by the rising of earth qi, or by poor winter storage, or by the decline of kidney fluid in old age, so that water cannot contain wood, which leads to blurred vision, tinnitus, and tremors.”

2. Old age and kidney deficiency

The kidney is the foundation of one's innate constitution, responsible for storing essence and producing marrow, and the brain is the sea of marrow. If the kidney essence is deficient due to old age, the marrow sea is insufficient and cannot fill the brain; or if the body is weak and has many diseases, which damages the kidney essence and kidney qi; or if there is excessive sexual intercourse and deficiency of yin essence, all of these can lead to an empty marrow sea and cause dizziness. Just as it is said in "Lingshu Hailun": "If the marrow sea is insufficient, the brain will spin, the ears will ring, the legs will be sore and dizzy, and one will be lazy and sleepy." If the kidney yin is deficient, water cannot contain wood, the liver yang is hyperactive, and the liver wind is moving inside, dizziness may also occur.

3. Physical weakness after illness

The spleen and stomach are the foundation of acquired constitution and the source of Qi and blood. If one is physically weak due to long-term illness, weak spleen and stomach, or has lost blood, which has damaged Qi and blood, or has an irregular diet, is worried and fatigued, these can all lead to deficiency of both Qi and blood. If Qi is deficient, the clear Yang will not rise; if blood is deficient, the clear orifices will not be nourished, thus causing dizziness. As stated in Jingyue Complete Works: Vertigo: "If the original disease is caused by qi deficiency, it is because the clear qi cannot rise, or it is caused by the loss of yang. It should be treated by raising yang and replenishing qi. If it is caused by blood deficiency, it is caused by excessive blood loss and yang has nowhere to attach. It should be treated by replenishing yin and blood. These are all symptoms of deficiency."

4. Improper diet

If one has an irregular diet and is addicted to fatty and sweet foods, the spleen and stomach will be damaged, resulting in dysfunction of their healthy functions, retention of dampness inside the body, which will accumulate and produce phlegm. The phlegm will block the clear yang in the middle burner from rising, and the head orifices will not be nourished, which will cause dizziness.

5. Fall injury, blood stasis and internal obstruction

Falls and injuries, brain trauma, and blood stasis can block the meridians, preventing Qi and blood from nourishing the head, which is why dizziness occurs.
