Normal range of white blood cell values, increase or decrease should be taken seriously

White blood cells are the guards of our body. If there are external pathogens attacking, the number of white blood cells will increase to resist. The most common phenomenon in clinical practice is the increase and decrease of white blood cells. If the white blood cell count increases, it means that the body has inflammation, and if it decreases, it means that the body's immunity will decrease.

1. Normal value range: (unit: 1/L)

(1) Adults: (4.0-10.0)×10^9/L

⑵ For newborns: (15-20)×10^9/L

⑶6 months to 2 years old: (11-12)×10^9/L

⑷4 to 14 years old: 8×10^9/L

2. Clinical significance:

⑴ Increase: common in acute bacterial infection, severe tissue damage, massive bleeding, poisoning and leukemia, etc.

⑵Reduce: the use of analgesics and sulfonamides; viral infections; weakened immune system; the effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

3. Leukopenia

White blood cells are a type of blood cell with a nucleus. The normal blood cell count is 4000-10000/μL (microliter). The number of white blood cells in the blood varies greatly at different times of the day and in different functional states of the body. When the number exceeds 10,000 per microliter, it is called leukocytosis; when the number is less than 4,000 per microliter, it is called leukopenia. Leukocytosis occurs when the body is inflamed (i.e., inflamed); leukocytosis can be hereditary, familial, acquired, etc. The majority of them are acquired. Drugs, radiation, infection, toxins, etc. can all cause granulocytopenia, with drug-induced granulocytosis being the most common. Avoiding medication is to avoid leukopenia caused by the medication.

Leukopenia refers to a group of symptoms caused by a sustained decrease in the number of peripheral white blood cells. Typical symptoms include dizziness, fatigue, soreness and weakness of limbs, loss of appetite, mental depression and low fever, which fall into the category of "deficiency and fatigue" in traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine treats leukocytopenia by invigorating qi and nourishing blood, tonifying the kidney and replenishing essence, and strengthening the spleen and nourishing the stomach.

Common causes of low white blood cell count include viral infection, typhoid fever, and medication. If the granulocytopenia is caused by drugs, the drugs should be stopped immediately and appropriate anti-leukocytogenic drugs should be used, such as colony stimulating factor (CsF), lithium carbonate, madder diepoxide, polyantigen A, etc. Stop exposure to radiation or other chemical toxins. Caused by hypersplenism, prone to recurrent and severe infection, splenectomy may be performed.
