Dosage of Uncaria rhynchophylla

Dosage of Uncaria rhynchophylla

Uncaria rhynchophylla is a common Chinese medicine that can treat convulsions caused by liver heat. It can also treat liver fire inflammation and the headaches and dizziness caused by it. People often say that medicine is three-part poison, which is not without accuracy. Long-term consumption or large doses will cause side effects and toxic effects, so the dosage needs to be adjusted when using Uncaria rhynchophylla. Therefore, different methods are adopted for Uncaria rhynchophylla with different properties according to the following introduction.

Uncaria rhynchophylla: a vine; young branches are slender, square-cylindrical or slightly 4-angular, and hairless. Leaves are papery, elliptic or elliptic-oblong, 5-12 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, glabrous on both sides, brown or reddish brown when dry, sometimes with white powder on the underside, with short or acuminate apex, base cuneate to truncate, sometimes slightly decurrent; lateral veins 4-8 pairs, vein axils sunken with mucous hairs; petiole 5-15 mm long, glabrous; stipules narrowly triangular, deeply 2-lobed for 2/3 of the total length, glabrous outside, glabrous inside or with mucous hairs at the base, lobes linear to triangular-lanceolate. The capitula is 5-8 mm in diameter excluding the corolla, solitary in the leaf axils, with a peduncle with one node, tiny bracts, or arranged in a single cymose shape, peduncle axillary, 5 cm long; bracteoles linear or linear-spatulate; flowers nearly sessile; calyx tube sparsely hairy, calyx lobes nearly triangular, 0.5 mm long, sparsely pubescent, with acute apex; corolla tube glabrous outside, or with sparse hairs, corolla lobes ovate, glabrous outside or slightly powdery pubescent, with edges sometimes ciliated; style extends out of the crown throat, stigma club-shaped. Infructescence 10-12 mm in diameter; capsules 5-6 mm long, pubescent, persistent calyx lobes nearly triangular, 1 mm long, stellately radiating. Flowering and fruiting period is from May to December.

Uncaria rhynchophylla is mainly produced in Guangxi, Guangdong, Hunan and Jiangxi; large-leaf Uncaria rhynchophylla is mainly produced in Yunnan, Guangxi, Hainan and other places; hairy Uncaria rhynchophylla is mainly produced in Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Fujian and Taiwan; sessile Uncaria rhynchophylla is mainly produced in Guangxi and Yunnan; sinensis Uncaria rhynchophylla is mainly produced in Sichuan, Hubei, Yunnan, Guizhou and other places.

Honeysuckle vine is good at clearing wind-heat in the meridians and treating meridian pain. Teng is good at extinguishing liver wind, clearing liver heat and treating muscle twitching, muscle tenderness, and convulsions of hands and feet. Clematis chinensis can relax muscles and tendons and activate collaterals, treating tendon spasms and difficulty in flexing and stretching tendons. Teng Xifeng can calm spasms and treat spasms of tendons and veins (spasmodic twitching) and spasms of hands and feet. White silkworm can dispel wind and treat epilepsy and stroke, and can also resolve phlegm and disperse nodules. Teng can extinguish wind, stop dizziness and convulsions, and clear away heat evil from the liver and heart.

In addition to lowering blood pressure, this product also has a sedative effect, but no hypnotic effect. Previous generations advocated "applying it later" when using Uncaria rhynchophylla to extinguish wind, believing that the effect of Uncaria rhynchophylla is greater when applied later, but will decrease if boiled for a long time. Recent experimental studies have shown that if Uncaria rhynchophylla is boiled for more than 20 minutes, its blood pressure-lowering components will be partially destroyed.

The dosage is generally two to five cents. One or two doses can be used for special severe cases.
