What should you not eat when you have gout symptoms?

Patients with gout must have a very hard time, because not only do they have to make correct dietary arrangements, but they also have to deal with the pain caused by gout. Patients with gout must abstain from certain foods, such as seafood, beer, old-fashioned soups, and other foods with high purine content. These will increase the uric acid content and directly aggravate gout, so they must abide by these dietary rules.

Symptoms of gout

1. Early gout is generally the initial stage of gout. At this time, the main symptoms are slight redness, swelling, pain, fever and other discomforts in the affected joints. If gout is not effectively treated at this time, the gout condition will become more serious if it is delayed.

2. Acute gout is the most common symptom in the early stage of the disease. It often occurs in the joints of the lower limbs, especially the big toe and the first metatarsophalangeal joint. When the disease first occurs, it is a single joint inflammation, but with repeated attacks, more joints will be affected. The onset of gout indicates that the blood uric acid concentration has been oversaturated for a long time, resulting in a large amount of urate deposition in the tissues.

3. Gout patients usually experience acute symptoms of gout in the second half of the night. The main symptoms are severe pain in the patient's finger joints, toe joints, arms and ankle joints, accompanied by swelling and redness. If examined under a microscope, pine needle-shaped urate deposits can be seen in the affected area of the patient.

4. The patient only has hyperuricemia but no clinical symptoms such as arthritis, tophi, and uric acid stones. The incidence rate among adult males is 5% to 7%. The patient had never had an attack of gouty arthritis, but during a physical examination, it was accidentally discovered that the uric acid level in the blood was high.

What can't you eat if you have gout?

1. Avoid spicy condiments

According to current understanding, food condiments such as MSG, soy sauce, chili and spicy condiments, curry, pepper, Sichuan pepper, mustard, ginger, fennel, star anise, etc. are not rich in purine. However, they can all excite the autonomic nervous system and induce acute attacks of gout. Excessive consumption of irritating condiments is not good for gout, so condiments should also be consumed in moderation. Especially chicken essence, which is a combination of nucleotides and MSG. Like MSG, it has no nutritional value except for making it taste delicious. Because it contains nucleotides, it is better to choose MSG for gout patients. Chicken essence contains nucleic acid, and its metabolic product is uric acid, so people with gout should not eat chicken essence.

2. Avoid foods containing high purine

Due to excessive consumption of high-purine foods, purine metabolism is disrupted, causing a large amount of uric acid to be unable to be metabolized in the body, forming urate crystals, which in turn cause gout. In fact, gout, the "imperial disease", is ultimately caused by the "little problem" of "gluttony", because foods high in purine are mostly delicacies such as big fish, meat, seafood, and animal offal. (To put it simply, if you are in the acute phase, it is recommended to eat a vegetarian diet and fast at all foods with moderate purine content. If you are in the remission phase, do not eat alcohol, seafood, or animal offal, and eat everything else in moderation.) Animal offal (liver, intestines, kidneys, brain), seafood (abalone, crab, lobster, salmon, sardines, tuna, carp, bass, trout, cod), shellfish, meat (beef, lamb, duck, goose, pigeon), soybean foods, lentils, spinach, cauliflower, asparagus, mushrooms, thick soup, and oatmeal. By the way, remember to eat less peanuts, as peanuts are high-fat and purine-rich foods).
