Functions of Senna Extract

Functions of Senna Extract

We know that senna is a relatively common Chinese medicine. It is very effective in treating stubborn constipation. The extract from senna has good therapeutic effects, and its active ingredient is sennoside. This ingredient can be converted into another substance in the colon, namely rhein anthrone, which can increase fluid secretion and is often used in combination with catharsis agents.

Function

The active ingredients in senna are called sennosides. This component molecule is converted by microorganisms in the colon into another substance, rhein anthrone, which has the beneficial effect of stimulating colonic activity (it speeds up intestinal motility and improves digestion) and increasing fluid secretion.

The laxative effects of sennosides and their active metabolite rhein anthrone are thought to inhibit the absorption of water and electrolytes by the large intestine, thereby increasing the volume and pressure of intestinal contents. This will stimulate a propulsive, tightening movement of the colon.

In addition, the stimulation of active chloride secretion increases the intestinal water and electrolyte content. These changes in active electrolyte transport are dependent on calcium at the plasma membrane surface.

The laxative effects of sennosides are in part via stimulation of colonic fluid and electrolyte secretion, which is mediated by stimulation of endogenous prostaglandin production. Sennosides can be prepared as enemas or suppositories or mixed with stool softeners or bulking fiber laxatives to form a combination laxative.

Security

Sennosides are strong laxatives and should be taken with caution and attention to dosage. Especially for pregnant, menstruating or postpartum women. Because it is an irritant, it should not be used in patients with gastrointestinal inflammation. This stimulatory effect on the intestinal mucosa may cause irritation, pain, or nausea, and in overdose may result in liquid stools or diarrhea.
