[Decoction] Add the above eight ingredients to four liters of water, boil until two liters remain, remove the residue; add in Glauber's salt, boil again until slightly boiling, divide into portions and take warm. If the problem persists, try again (Modern usage: decoct in water and take afterward with Glauber's salt).

[Original text] Thirteen days of typhoid fever, no relief, fullness in the chest and flanks and vomiting, night sweats at mealtime, and slight diarrhea. This is the original symptom of Chaihu, "the patient did not have diarrhea after taking purgatives, but now has diarrhea instead." It is advisable to take Xiao Chaihu Decoction first to relieve the external symptoms, and then take Chaihu Jia Mangxiao Decoction as the main treatment. (104)

[Explanation] This syndrome is characterized by an unfavorable Shaoyang pivot and slight dryness and congestion in the Yangming meridian. Therefore, Xiao Chaihu Decoction is used to harmonize Shaoyang, and Glauber's salt is used to purge heat and remove solidity, soften hard masses and moisten dryness. Because the vital energy is relatively weak and the internal fullness is not severe, there is no need to use rhubarb and immature bitter orange to clear away stagnation, but keep ginseng and licorice to strengthen the vital energy. This prescription is in small dosage and is a light dose for both reconciliation and clearing the interior. For Shaoyang combined with interior excess syndrome, there are Da Chaihu Decoction and Chaihu Jia Mangxiao Decoction according to its severity and urgency. However, both of them are based on Shaoyang, so Chaihu is the main medicine. In clinical application, the priority should be clear.

9 grams each of Scutellaria baicalensis, Bupleurum chinense, Pinellia ternata, Codonopsis pilosula, ginger, 6 grams of roasted licorice, 6 dates, 9 grams of Glauber's salt (separately), add 2 cups of water, boil and take half a cup, take all at once. I took the medicine at 10 am on the same day, and had a bowel movement at around 4 pm, with all symptoms relieved. The patient was advised to take Angelica fluid extract regularly, and menstruation returned to normal. There has been no recurrence in the past 4 years, and she gave birth to 2 girls.

Note: When menstruation comes and the patient is affected by external evil, symptoms of Shaoyang disease appear. Xiao Chaihu Decoction should be used for treatment. If constipation occurs, it is a sign of concurrent Shaoyang and Yangming diseases. However, although the patient has constipation but no other Yangming bowel obstruction symptoms such as abdominal distension, it is known that it is only a slight dryness and obstruction, and it is not suitable to use heavy doses of Da Chaihu Decoction for treatment. Instead, Xiao Chaihu Jia Mangxiao Decoction should be used to harmonize Shaoyang and lightly remove Yangming dryness and obstruction. Proper treatment will achieve good results.
