How to calculate the burn area of both upper limbs

How to calculate the burn area of both upper limbs

Many people are not particularly familiar with the term burn area. When a burn occurs, there are certain methods to calculate the burn area. The two most common calculation methods are China's nine-point method and the palm method. If both upper limbs are burned, they should be checked in time. The severity of the burn can be judged through several situations, such as the burn area, the depth of the burn, etc.

There are two methods for calculating the body surface area of an adult. 1. The Chinese Nine-point Method:

That is, the human body is divided into 11 equal parts, each part is equal to 9% of the body surface area. For example, the head and neck account for one nine, or 9%, of the body surface area. For burns on the head and neck, the burn area should be 9%. The head and neck can be divided into the hair, face, and neck, each accounting for 3%. If only the face is burned, the estimated burn area is 3%. The calculation of body surface area for children is slightly different from that for adults because children's heads are relatively large and their limbs are smaller. Therefore, the body surface area of children of different ages can be calculated using the following formula. The area of the child's head is 9 plus (12 minus age) = % The area of the child's lower limbs is 41 minus (12 minus age) = %

2. Palm method:

If the wound surface is irregular, the palm method can be used for calculation. The patient's own palm (five fingers together) is equivalent to 1% of the body surface area, and the burn area can be calculated in this way.

Several aspects to determine the severity of burns: 1. Burn area: The larger the burn area, the more serious the damage to the human body. 2. Burn depth: Usually divided into three degrees and four levels. The lightest is the first-degree burn, which causes local redness and pain. The deeper the burn, the greater the damage to local tissues and the more serious it is. 3. The location of the burn: Different parts of the human body have different importance. If the head, face, neck, respiratory tract, etc. are burned, it is more serious. Burns on active parts such as hand joints are likely to cause deformities in the future.

4. The patient's age and physical condition. The elderly, the weak, children, and those suffering from some serious diseases will have more serious reactions after burns, and will be more difficult to treat and recover more slowly. The wounds of burn patients with malnutrition will also heal more slowly. 5. Complications: Burns combined with other injuries such as fractures are more difficult to treat and recover from than simple burns. For example, burns complicated by sepsis will often affect the outcome of burn treatment, and sepsis can be a major factor in death from severe burns.
