Left thalamic infarction

Left thalamic infarction

The site of left thalamic infarction is located in the left thalamus, which can cause contralateral hemiplegia in patients. Generally, when the left thalamus is infarcted, it is usually manifested by a series of symptoms in the right limbs, such as pain, numbness, and loss of sensation in the limbs. In severe cases, coma and cerebral hemorrhage may also occur. If this disease can be treated promptly in the acute phase, the recovery rate is relatively optimistic. Patients should pay more attention to diet and exercise to avoid secondary recurrence.

1. Concept

Cerebral infarction is caused by cerebral atherosclerosis, which causes damage to the vascular endothelium, narrowing of the cerebral artery lumen, and then formation of blood clots, which aggravates the arterial stenosis or completely blocks it, leading to ischemia of brain tissue. Cerebral infarction is divided into many types according to the location of the lesion. Among them, infarction occurring in the left thalamus is called left thalamic infarction.

2. Causes

It is closely related to hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure, and arteriosclerosis.

Symptoms

1. Thalamic infarction may cause contralateral hemisensory disturbance, contralateral hemipain, contralateral hemiesthesia or hyperesthesia, contralateral facial expression movement disorder, and contralateral hemimovement involuntary movement. But different patients have different manifestations, mainly sensory impairment.

2. Numbness, weakness and stiffness of the opposite limbs, headache, cold legs, slow finger movements, swelling of the palms and wrists, a feeling of pricking the soles of the feet, and restlessness. Electrolyte imbalance, unconsciousness.

IV. Hazards

If treatment is not timely and recovery after the illness is not good, it may lead to paralysis and inability to take care of oneself.

5. Diagnosis

The diagnosis can be confirmed when cranial CT scan shows symmetrical ventricles on both sides, narrow sulci and cisterns, and small low-density foci in the left thalamus.

6. Treatment

1. The disease is in the acute stage within two weeks of onset and the patient should be hospitalized for active blood circulation, blood stasis removal and thrombolytic treatment. After two weeks, it is recommended to take Chinese herbal decoctions in addition to conventional Western medicine.

2. After the condition stabilizes, encourage the patient to do active exercises, get out of bed and move around as soon as possible, help the patient to train to go up and down stairs, so that the affected limb can be exercised, which is conducive to the recovery of function.

VII. Prevention

1. Eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, black fungus, etc., and do appropriate activities, such as brisk walking, slow walking, etc., and maintain a good attitude and healthy brain habits. Quit smoking and drinking.

8. Patient Rehabilitation Activities

Gradually strengthen functional training and strive to achieve self-care. After being able to walk on your own, you can lift your legs and take a stride when walking, and gradually move on to exercises such as stepping over door sills and walking on slopes, gradually lengthening the intervals. Patients whose lower limbs have recovered well can also perform exercises such as short-interval running to gradually achieve the goal of being able to take care of themselves in daily life.
