What will happen if a pregnant woman drinks water during the sugar screening?

Pregnant women need to undergo multiple prenatal examinations during pregnancy to ensure their own health and the healthy development of the fetus. They cannot drink water when undergoing Down syndrome screening. If they drink water, it will often lead to incorrect examinations. They must fast for more than eight hours before undergoing Down syndrome screening, which means they cannot drink or eat anything. This is an important examination item for detecting diabetes in the early stages.

Can pregnant women drink water before doing sugar screening?

Usually not. You need to fast for more than 8 hours before the test and cannot drink anything. Gestational diabetes is diabetes that occurs or is discovered for the first time after pregnancy. Its incidence rate has been reported to be 1% to 14% in countries around the world, and it affects both mother and child. High blood sugar in early pregnancy can cause abnormal fetal development or even death, and the incidence of miscarriage is as high as 15% to 30%.

The incidence of fetal malformation, premature birth, stillbirth and fetal death is higher than that of normal pregnant women. The incidence of gestational hypertension in diabetic pregnant women is 3 to 5 times that of normal women; their resistance is reduced and they are prone to infection; the incidence of polyhydramnios is 10 times higher than that of normal pregnant women; the incidence of macrosomia is significantly increased to 25% to 42%, and the chances of dystocia, birth canal injury, and surgical delivery are increased; they are prone to diabetic ketoacidosis, which threatens the life safety of mother and child. Newborns are prone to respiratory distress syndrome and neonatal hypoglycemia, and the mortality rate is high.

Four major misunderstandings about sugar screening during pregnancy

1. Eat regularly a few days before the glucose screening and glucose tolerance test. Avoid eating too much meat and fish or sweets. Irregular diet in the previous few days will affect the test results. It is recommended to check again after 2 to 3 days. Eating a lot of sweets will be reflected in the test results to some extent. For example, in the summer, the proportion of expectant mothers who fail the sugar screening and glucose tolerance test is particularly high, which is directly related to eating too much watermelon. However, if the expectant mother has eaten a lot of sweets recently and the glucose screening and glucose tolerance results are also qualified, it actually means that her pancreatic islet function is very good and there is no need to worry. 2. You should fast after 8 o'clock in the evening on the day before the sugar screening and sugar tolerance test, and even drink less water. The sugar screening test can be random, that is, there is no restriction on diet. It only requires not drinking sweet drinks in the early morning and not eating too sweet food. However, the glucose tolerance test requires fasting for 8 hours and the fasting blood sugar test must be completed before 10 am. This means that there is no so-called fasting time the night before, and only the fasting time on the day of the test is required. If you are thirsty, you can drink 1 to 2 sips of water to relieve it. Unless you drink a very large amount of water, it will not have the effect of diluting the blood.

3. Drink the prepared sugar water slowly so that your blood sugar will not rise suddenly. The speed at which you drink sugar water will affect the glucose screening and glucose tolerance tests. Doctors generally require expectant mothers to finish drinking it within 1 minute. And the sugar water is thoroughly stirred in advance to ensure that the expectant mother fully consumes the required amount of sugar. 4. Be sure to walk back and forth after drinking the sugar water to help the body's metabolism. For expectant mothers, normal activity levels have little effect on promoting sugar metabolism. For people with diabetes, the symptoms will not disappear just by walking around frequently, so this is just psychological comfort. It should be reminded that if the expectant mother goes out for a walk to kill time, it is recommended not to walk too far and ensure that she can reach the blood drawing station within the specified time, preferably not more than 5 minutes. If the time is too long or the exercise is too much, it will also affect the test results.
