Can I wear contact lenses when I'm pregnant?

When a woman is pregnant, due to the special nature of her body, she must first consider the health of the fetus when doing anything. During pregnancy, the corneal tissue will become edematous, and the contact lenses themselves will block the cornea from contacting the air. If contact lenses are worn for a long time during pregnancy, it may cause keratitis and conjunctivitis. Therefore, it is best not to wear contact lenses during pregnancy, and you can choose to wear frame glasses. If you really want to wear it during pregnancy, you need to keep the following precautions in mind.

Many women are accustomed to wearing contact lenses before they become pregnant. Although they pay attention to some food taboos after pregnancy, they still have no clear concept of whether they can wear contact lenses. Pregnancy is a major event in a woman's life. In order to welcome the arrival of a new life, the mother's body will undergo many changes, such as endocrine hormones, metabolism, blood, cardiovascular and immune functions, etc., in order to provide the fetus with a proper growth environment. These changes in body functions will also have a physiological impact on the windows of the soul - the eyes.

During pregnancy, a woman's corneal tissue will experience mild edema, causing the cornea to increase in thickness. Contact lenses themselves will block the cornea from contacting the air. If you continue to wear contact lenses during pregnancy, it will increase corneal hypoxia, which can easily cause corneal damage and reduce the sensitivity of the eyes, resulting in vision loss, unexplained tears, dry eyes and other phenomena. Some pregnant women may also experience problems such as decreased intraocular pressure and narrowed visual field. Expectant mothers who wear contact lenses during pregnancy are more likely to develop keratitis and conjunctivitis than usual.

Statistics show that 30% of pregnant women will develop eye problems when wearing contact lenses. If not treated in time, it will affect their normal life and may even increase the difficulty of treatment due to contraindications to medication during pregnancy.

Precautions for pregnant women to wear contact lenses

1. Cut your nails short and wash your hands thoroughly before putting on or handling lenses.

2. Operate and put on lenses on a clean, flat table to avoid dropping them on the ground.

3. Before wearing the lenses each time, carefully check whether the lenses are damaged, dirty or have sediment. If it is damaged, it cannot be worn. If there are stains and sediment, they must be cleaned and rinsed before wearing.

4. Distinguish the front and back of the lens and wear it with the front side facing upwards.

5. Clean, rinse, disinfect and store lenses according to prescribed procedures. Note that when cleaning, you need to rub it more than 20 times, rinse it thoroughly, and disinfect it for more than 4 hours.

6. After opening the bottle and using the care solution, close the lid tightly in time after each use. Do not touch the bottle mouth with your fingers. The care solution should be used up within the specified time. If it is not used up, it should be discarded and replaced with fresh care solution. 7. It is best to soak the lenses with high-efficiency cleaning tablets every week, and the lenses must be thoroughly cleaned and rinsed before and after soaking.

8. Do not use any eye drops when wearing contact lenses (unless they are eye drops specifically for contact lenses), otherwise the ingredients of the drops will be adsorbed on the lenses, not only making the lenses cloudy and hard, but the high concentration of drug components retained in the lenses will damage the eye tissues.

9. If the lenses are not used for a long time, they must be strictly cleaned, rinsed, disinfected, soaked in care solution, and placed in the storage room of the refrigerator. The solution should be replaced once a week. When wearing them again, they must be carefully cleaned, rinsed, and disinfected.
