Histrionic personality disorder treatment

Histrionic personality disorder treatment

There are many types of personality disorders, histrionic personality disorder is a typical one, and it is more common in girls. The typical characteristics of histrionic personality disorder are excessive emotionality and immature personality. Histrionic personality disorder is a disease, not a symptom of a certain period of time. It is often a lifelong and persistent condition that requires treatment. Let's take a look at the treatment of histrionic personality disorder.

Histrionic personality disorder, also known as attention-seeking personality disorder or hysterical personality disorder, is more common in women. The manifestations of male hysterical personality are not different from those of females, but most of them are under 25 years old. This type of personality disorder is characterized by excessive emotionality, exaggerated words and deeds to attract attention, and immature personality. The prevalence rate is 2.1%-3%. Histrionic personality disorder is a personality disorder characterized by excessive emotionality or exaggerated words and deeds to attract the attention of others. People with histrionic personality disorder often behave in a suggestive manner and are concerned with their appearance. They often attract attention by performing themselves, being overly artificial and exaggerated, being particularly suggestible and dependent, being self-indulgent, not considering others, and being highly self-centered. Such people are emotionally revealing, have rich facial expressions, and their joys, sorrows, anger, and happiness are all visible on their faces. They are delicate and artificial, easily lose their temper, like others' sympathy and pity, have changeable moods and are easily suggestible, extremely emotional, and easily excited. They have shallow thinking, are not used to logical thinking, and their words, manners and behaviors appear naive and childish.

Treating histrionic personality disorder is a relatively difficult psychological disorder. Even in the United States, where psychology is most developed, the results of clinical treatment are not optimistic. This psychological disorder presents a high suicide rate and is often treated in hospital abroad. Individual psychodynamic psychotherapy including psychoanalysis remains the cornerstone of treatment for histrionic personality disorder. This treatment directly helps patients gradually realize: 1. How their self-esteem is inappropriately based on their ability to get attention, thereby wasting opportunities to develop other skills; and 2. How their superficial interpersonal relationships and emotional experiences reflect their subconscious fear of real, fixed relationships. Most of these increased awareness occurred through analysis of the relationship between "here and now," "patient and physician," rather than through reconstruction of childhood experiences. The therapist should be aware that the idealizations and erotic allure that such patients typically bring to therapy are probing material, and the therapist should be aware of countertransference gratifications.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most widely used therapy in clinical practice. Treatment focuses on improving patients' interpersonal relationships and teaching them how to express their wants and needs. There is currently no better specific treatment method, but we should take a positive attitude to correct it. Drug treatment: Although drugs cannot improve personality structure, they are not useless as symptomatic treatment to improve certain symptoms. Benzodiazepine anxiolytics can be used for patients with obvious anxiety symptoms. Antiepileptic drugs can be used for patients with fulminant personality disorder accompanied by EEG changes. Lithium carbonate is effective for patients with impulsive or aggressive behavior. Psychosurgery: Temporal lobectomy or stereotactic surgery can improve the manifestations of some personality disorders, but the indications should be strictly controlled.
