Common causes of unilateral nosebleeds

Common causes of unilateral nosebleeds

Nosebleeds are very common in life. Many young people have high energy and will have nosebleeds due to the hot climate and getting angry. Some young people will also have nosebleeds due to excessive exercise during sports. Nosebleeds are also common in middle-aged and elderly people. Most of the nosebleeds in middle-aged and elderly people are caused by middle-aged diseases. So what are the common causes of unilateral nosebleeds?

"Lingshu - The Origin of All Diseases" says: "If the Yang meridians are damaged, blood will overflow, and if blood overflows, nosebleeds will occur." Nosebleeds are also the result of damage to the Yang meridians in the nose caused by various reasons. Clinically, epistaxis is closely related to the lungs, stomach, liver, kidneys, and spleen, as described below:

1. The spleen fails to regulate blood, and the disease does not heal for a long time. Worry, fatigue, and improper diet will damage the spleen. The spleen is weak, and the blood regulation is disordered. The qi cannot restrain the blood, and the blood does not flow through the meridians. The blood escapes from the meridians and overflows into the nose, causing nosebleeds.

2. When there is excessive heat in the lung meridian, the external wind-heat or dryness-heat will first attack the lung. The evil heat will follow the meridians and block the nasal orifices. The heat will damage the blood vessels, causing blood to flow abnormally and overflow into the nose, thus causing epistaxis. Volume 4 of "Surgery Authenticity" says: "Nosebleeding is caused by excessive fire in the lung meridian, which forces blood to flow out of the nose."

3. Liver fire goes up, emotions are frustrated, liver qi is stagnant, long-term stagnation turns into fire, or violent anger damages the liver, liver fire goes up, blood moves with the fire, steams the nasal orifices, blood is damaged, blood overflows, and epistaxis occurs. "Collection of Experiences in Ulcers" says: "Sometimes it is caused by the seven emotions hurting the body, which stirs the blood inside and causes it to overflow with the qi."

4. Liver and kidney yin deficiency. Excessive sexual intercourse consumes kidney essence, or long-term illness damages yin, liver and kidney deficiency, water cannot contain wood, liver cannot store blood, virtual fire rises, blood rises, overflows into the clear orifices, and causes nosebleed. Volume 2 of Zheng Yin Mai Zhi says: "Sexual fatigue may damage the kidneys, resulting in insufficient yin essence, causing fire in the water; or anger may damage the liver, causing liver fire to be easily agitated, causing yin blood to rise with the fire and go astray from the meridians, thus causing internal injury and nosebleeds." Volume 30 of Jing Yue Quan Shu also says: "Although most nosebleeds are caused by fire, they are more common in those with yin deficiency, because fatigue damages yin, and water cannot control fire, which is most likely to agitate the blood in the Chong, Ren and Yin regions."

5. Excessive heat in the stomach. There is heat accumulation in the stomach meridian, or due to excessive drinking of strong alcohol, excessive consumption of spicy food, which leads to excessive heat in the stomach, internal heat burning, and inflammation along the meridians, damaging the yang meridians in the nose. The blood rushes with the heat and flows outside the meridians, causing epistaxis. Volume 4 of Shoushibaoyuan says: "Nosebleeding is bleeding from the nose. Yang heat boils and stagnates, which causes the stomach meridian to move. The stomach fire rises fiercely, and the blood flows randomly, so it is nosebleed." Volume 9 of Sanyinjiyibingzhengfanglun also says: "If the patient drinks too much alcohol and eats hot food such as roasted, scorched or five pungent foods, the blood will move, and the blood will overflow with the air, causing nosebleed, which is called alcohol and food nosebleed.
