How to treat a retracted eardrum

In the usual treatment of retracted tympanum, it is still necessary to find out the causes of the disease and give corresponding treatment. When the Eustachian tube is inflamed, the Eustachian tube is blocked due to swelling, and the pressure in the middle ear cavity gradually decreases and becomes negative because the gas cannot be replenished in time. The eardrum is attracted by the negative pressure and sinks inward, and its movement is restricted. The patient may experience hearing loss and confusion.

In this case, as long as a certain amount of gas can be delivered into the middle ear cavity in time (such as Eustachian tube insufflation), the eardrum will immediately return to its normal position and hearing will immediately improve. This is the pathological manifestation of acute catarrhal otitis media. If this happens frequently, it will turn into chronic catarrhal otitis media, which is manifested by retracted tympanic membrane, opacity, limited hearing, etc. For retracted tympanic membrane, you can pinch your nose and blow air to force the Eustachian tube open to maintain pressure balance in the middle ear cavity. You can also use eardrum massage, which is to press the tragus with your hand to close the opening of the external auditory canal, and then press down tightly and loosely, using the air in the ear canal to massage the eardrum and increase the mobility of the eardrum. If the effect is not satisfactory, you can go to the hospital regularly to have Eustachian tube inflation surgery.

Cause/recessed eardrum The eardrum is the boundary between the outer ear and the middle ear. It is located at the bottom of the external auditory canal and is an oval, translucent membrane.

The surface of the eardrum presents a shallow funnel shape. When the eardrum is retracted, the eardrum sinks inward toward the middle ear. A retracted eardrum is caused by an imbalance in air pressure inside and outside the eardrum. There is a tube in the nasopharynx that opens downward, backward, and outward, with the other end opening on the front wall of the eardrum. This tube is called the Eustachian tube. Its function is to communicate the tympanic cavity and the nasopharynx, so that the atmospheric pressure in the tympanic cavity and the external auditory canal is equal, so as to maintain the balance of the tympanic membrane pressure. If you suffer from secretory otitis media, it may cause Eustachian tube dysfunction, causing an imbalance in the atmospheric pressure inside and outside the eardrum. In this way, due to the effect of atmospheric pressure from the direction of the external auditory canal, the eardrum will retract over time.
