Symptoms of intramuscular injection into the sciatic nerve

Symptoms of intramuscular injection into the sciatic nerve

Sciatica pain is mainly caused by low back pain. Once sciatica pain occurs, doctors will recommend patients to rest in bed and strictly prohibit large movements. Conventional treatment for sciatica pain may include injections. So during the injection process, what are the symptoms of intramuscular injection into the sciatic nerve? What impact do these symptoms have on our human body?

There are many causes of sciatica, including lumbar disc herniation, piriformis syndrome, spinal stenosis, tumors and other diseases. Among the many causes, lumbar disc herniation is the most common one.

The intervertebral disc is located between the vertebrae, and its main function is to enable the vertebrae above and below it to move. The intervertebral disc consists of two main parts: the outer part is the fibrous sheath that surrounds the inner nucleus pulposus. The nucleus pulposus changes position with activity. When the nucleus pulposus is extended, it moves forward; conversely, when the nucleus pulposus is bent forward, it moves backward.

When you bend forward repeatedly for a long time, the nucleus pulposus moves backward, which pulls on the annulus fibrosus behind it. When the pressure continues, the annulus fibrosus will be torn. As a result, the nucleus pulposus may leak out of the ruptured annulus fibrosus. When a herniated disc hits a lumbar nerve, the nerve becomes inflamed, causing pain.

Sciatic nerve injury causes paralysis of all muscles in the posterior thigh, calf and foot, resulting in inability to flex the knee joint, complete loss of ankle and toe motor function, and foot drop. Loss of sensation in the posterior and lateral calf and foot, and neurotrophic changes in the foot. Because the quadriceps tendon is in a straight position, the whole knee joint is in a striding gait when walking. If the injury is in the middle and lower part of the posterior thigh, the hamstring muscle is normal and the knee flexion function is preserved. High-level injuries have a poor prognosis and should be explored surgically as soon as possible. Neurolysis and repair surgery should be performed according to the situation. Before going to bed every day, use a hot towel or hot salt wrapped in cloth to heat the waist or buttocks. The temperature should not be too high, but comfortable. Rest on a hard bed and insist on doing bed gymnastics; during the acute pain period, do not pick up objects weighing more than 10 kilograms and do not use your legs, arms and back to lift heavy objects. You can push but not pull heavy objects.

Whether the intramuscular injection hits the blood vessels or nerves depends on the drug. Generally, if the drug is difficult to inject and enters the blood vessels, it will cause arrhythmia, convulsions, nausea, headache, etc. If it hits the sciatic nerve, symptoms of sciatic pain such as numbness and pain in the lower limbs will appear.

If the sciatic nerve is hit, it will usually heal in a day or two. If a blood vessel is hit, it will depend on what medication you choose. It usually doesn't affect your life and will be fine after a day or two.
