Urticaria is a relatively common disease. Generally, urticaria can be divided into several stages, acute urticaria and chronic urticaria. There are many causes of urticaria, but urticaria is not contagious. Therefore, even if you come into contact with a patient with urticaria, it will not be transmitted unless it is viral urticaria. However, most urticaria is simple and does not contain toxins.

Is acute urticaria contagious?

Urticaria, commonly known as "hives" and "wind bumps", is a common and frequently occurring disease. The most prominent symptom of urticaria is sudden itching of the skin, followed by the appearance of flat wheals that are higher than the skin.

Some are red, some are white, and they increase in number, with different sizes and shapes but clear boundaries, accompanied by itching, which worsens at night. The time of onset is irregular. The wheals gradually spread and may merge into patches, which may be limited to a certain part or spread throughout the body. A small number of patients may experience nausea.

Once infected, acute urticaria will cause itching of the skin all over the body and may cause some herpes. Since acute urticaria is so difficult to control, is the condition contagious? First, let’s look at the cause of this disease. Common causes of acute urticaria include:

①The most common foods are fish, shrimp, crab and eggs. Secondly, certain spices and condiments can also cause it.

② Many drugs can cause this disease. Penicillin, sulfonamides, furazolidone, serum vaccines, etc. often cause urticaria through immune mechanisms. Drugs such as aspirin, morphine, atropine, and vitamin B1 are histamine releasers that can directly cause mast cells to release histamine and trigger urticaria.

③Infection, including viruses (such as influenza virus, hepatitis virus), bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureus), fungi and parasites (such as roundworms, etc.).

④Animal and plant factors, such as insect bites or inhalation of pollen, feathers, dandruff, etc.

⑤ Physical factors, such as cold, heat, sunlight, friction and pressure can cause it. In addition, gastrointestinal diseases, metabolic disorders, endocrine disorders and mental factors can also cause it. During the anti-allergy period, patients should pay attention to eating light food and avoid places with strong odors, such as flower shops, flower and bird markets, etc.

Acute urticaria is not contagious. Acute urticaria often occurs acutely, with itching all over the body and wheals of varying sizes occurring when scratched.

Wheals may merge into large lesions or form map-like lesions. Acute patients often present with red swollen patches, and some acute skin lesions may have blisters and bullae, which is called bullous urticaria. Purple spots may occur in the center of some areas, which is called purpuric urticaria.
