So what causes potato poisoning? What symptoms will occur if poisoning occurs?

Symptoms of potato poisoning: Eating a large amount of sprouted or undercooked potatoes will cause some symptoms to appear within 10 minutes to several hours after eating: 1. Damage to the oral mucosa : Solanine has a stimulating effect on the skin and mucous membranes. After eating, damage to the oral mucosa will occur, burning in the mouth and throat, and itching in the mouth and throat will occur. Drinking salt water can relieve symptoms.

2. Gastroenteritis discomfort reaction Solanine has a stimulating effect on the gastrointestinal mucosa. In the early stage of poisoning, there will be a burning sensation in the upper abdomen, followed by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms. If the symptoms are mild, they can be self-detoxified after 1-2 hours. If the poisoning is severe, there may be other symptoms. 3. Difficulty breathing After solanine enters the blood, its main toxicity manifests itself in the lungs. When the concentration is too high, shortness of breath may occur, and in severe cases, even difficulty breathing, which may lead to respiratory paralysis and endanger life. 4. Fever, vomiting and water loss. The main symptoms of solanine poisoning are fever and vomiting. If excessive intake occurs, the fever will persist and the vomiting will be repeated. In severe cases, repeated vomiting may cause excessive water loss, resulting in a drop in blood pressure, a rapid heart rate, and even shock.

How to detoxify potato poisoning? When symptoms of poisoning occur after eating potatoes, first aid measures should be taken in time. You can induce vomiting immediately after eating, perform gastric lavage or induce laxatives. To induce vomiting, you can use chopsticks to stimulate the throat. After poisoning, you should drink more boiled water or sugar water. You can also take 1% tannic acid solution, strong tea or vinegar to break down the toxin solanine contained in potatoes and play a detoxifying role. In addition to taking the above things, you can also take sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfate, about 15 to 20 grams, to induce laxative. If conditions permit, 5% glucose solution can be injected intravenously. If there are symptoms of abdominal pain, atropine can be injected intramuscularly. Tips: Do not eat sprouted potatoes. If you want to eat them, dig out the sprouted part and the surrounding area, soak the remaining part in clean water for 30 to 40 minutes, and then cook it before eating. You can add some vinegar during cooking, which can destroy solanine. In addition, you should know that whether eating sprouted or undercooked potatoes will cause poisoning depends on the amount. Eating sprouted potatoes will not necessarily cause poisoning. However, even if you eat very little and have no reaction after eating, you should still remain vigilant after eating sprouted potatoes. It is best to drink more boiled water or sugar water in time to speed up excretion.
