Long streaks of mucus in stool

Long streaks of mucus in stool

The presence of long strips of mucus in the stool is called mucus stool. Normal stool actually also contains a small amount of mucus, but it is more uniform and not easy to detect. If it is caused by mucus in the stool, it may be a symptom of enteritis. The key is to determine whether this situation occurs frequently or occasionally. If it occurs frequently, you should go to the hospital for examination, determine the cause as soon as possible, and solve it in a targeted manner.

In case of enteritis, the increased mucus is evenly mixed in the feces; in case of colitis, the feces have gradually taken shape, and the mucus is not easy to mix with the feces; the mucus from the rectum adheres to the surface of the feces. The mucus of simple mucus stool is transparent and slightly viscous, while the purulent mucus is yellow-white and opaque. It is seen in various types of enteritis, bacillary dysentery, amoebic dysentery, and acute schistosomiasis.

Causes and pathogenesis: Exposure to cold and dampness or excessive consumption of raw and cold food can damage the stomach and intestines. The spleen is weak and cannot function properly, water and dampness stagnate inside the body, the middle yang is insufficient, the dampness turns into cold, the cold and dampness are contained inside the body, and improper diet can cause the cold and dampness to block the intestines, obstructing the qi of the large intestine, causing qi stagnation and blood stasis. The qi and blood combine with the foul qi in the intestines and turn into pus and blood, causing dysentery due to cold and dampness. Their stools are mostly white frozen. People with weak stomach and spleen, affected by cold and damp air, or damp-heat dysentery, taking too many cold foods can suppress the middle yang, and when the middle yang is damaged, the spleen will not function well, the qi of the large intestine will be blocked, qi and blood will easily stagnate, and qi and blood will be combined with the foul air in the intestines and easily turn into white jelly. All of these are due to spleen yang deficiency and insufficient circulation in the middle part, which leads to gastrointestinal dysfunction and the production of white frost. Once the circulation in the middle part is improved, the white frost will disappear. Damp-heat accumulation at the beginning of summer heat, or excessive consumption of strong wine, rich, sweet and fatty foods, can produce damp-heat, which can accumulate inside the body, block the abdominal qi, cause stagnation of qi and blood, and turn into pus and blood, which then cause damp-heat dysentery and produce red and white frozen mucus in the stool. If damp-heat dysentery does not heal for a long time and the damp-heat evil lingers, the remaining damp-heat evil in the stomach and intestines will never be cleared, and the filthy things in the intestines cannot be completely eliminated, resulting in persistent mucus in the stool.

People with strong liver wood are often prone to liver wood overcoming earth, causing gastrointestinal qi disorder, generating damp heat or cold dampness, and foul things cannot be discharged normally, accumulating in the intestines, which is the source of mucus, white jelly and other things. Or it may be originally damp-heat dysentery, which has not been cured for a long time. The person has strong liver qi, which can easily suppress the spleen and earth, resulting in mucus that lasts for a long time. If dysentery due to spleen deficiency, dampness and heat does not heal for a long time, the spleen and stomach's vital energy will be damaged, while the dampness and heat evil will often linger, causing spleen deficiency, dampness and heat evil to cause mixed troubles. This type is the most common clinically. On the one hand, there are symptoms of spleen deficiency such as poor appetite, sallow complexion, thin muscles, fatigue and weakness; on the other hand, there are symptoms of damp-heat accumulation in the colon such as diarrhea with red and white frozen substances, abdominal cramps, thundering, bloating, difficulty in defecation and constipation. If the spleen is weak, the vital energy will be weak, so it is not suitable to expel evil spirits. If the evil spirits linger, they cannot be expelled quickly due to the spleen deficiency, resulting in a tricky situation where one has to take the vital energy into consideration when trying to expel the evil spirits, but one has to replenish the vital energy but it is weak and the evil spirits cannot be expelled.
