Why does a woman have back pain when lying down?

Many women believe that lower back pain is caused by lumbar muscle strain or problems with the lumbar spine, so they often go to orthopedics for consultation. But in fact, low back pain may also be caused by chronic pelvic inflammatory disease. According to experts, abdominal pain is not the only symptom of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease. Due to inflammatory changes in the pelvic cavity, congestion, edema, and adhesions of connective tissue can directly compress the lumbar nerves, often manifesting as low back pain. Experts remind that women who often suffer from low back pain, if accompanied by abnormal menstruation and leucorrhea, should see a gynecologist as soon as possible to see if chronic pelvic inflammatory disease is to blame.

The culprit of "stubborn" low back pain turns out to be chronic pelvic inflammatory disease

Ms. Liu, 45 years old this year, has been troubled by low back pain in recent years. She has visited the orthopedic departments of several hospitals and has undergone countless lumbar CT and MRI examinations. The doctors' diagnosis was always "lumbar disc herniation." In fact, the examination results did clearly show that she had lumbar disc herniation. However, what puzzled her and her doctors was that despite various treatments, the "stubborn" back pain that tormented her did not ease at all.

A few days ago, she came to the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University for treatment. After learning about her "medical history" and conducting a detailed examination on her, Chen Jianping, director of the hospital's rehabilitation medicine department and associate chief physician, carefully asked about her menstrual history and then suggested that she have a pelvic color ultrasound examination. The results showed that she had symptoms of pelvic fluid accumulation, and the gynecological examination results also suggested "pelvic inflammatory disease". Chen Jianping believes that her back pain may not be caused by lumbar disc herniation, but by chronic pelvic inflammatory disease. After three courses of rehabilitation treatment combining traditional Chinese and Western medicine, Ms. Liu's pelvic inflammatory disease was under control, her menstruation became regular, and her back pain completely disappeared.

Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease is often misdiagnosed as lumbar disease due to low back pain

Chen Jianping introduced that pelvic inflammatory disease is a common gynecological disease. “Female pelvic inflammatory disease can be confined to one area or occur in several areas at the same time. It can be divided into acute and chronic types.”

"Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease is a common gynecological disease, and abdominal pain is not its only symptom." Chen Jianping introduced that chronic pelvic inflammatory disease may also manifest as soreness in the lumbosacral area. This is because when there is inflammation in the pelvic cavity, various inflammatory changes will occur in the pelvic cavity. Congestion, edema, adhesion of connective tissue, etc. will directly compress the lumbosacral nerves, causing tenderness in the waist, thereby causing irritation symptoms of lumbosacral pain.

Chen Jianping said that many women mistake the low back pain caused by pelvic inflammatory disease as lumbar muscle strain or lumbar spine problems. Therefore, when low back pain occurs, they will first go to an orthopedic department for treatment. If after examination it is found that there is indeed a problem with the lumbar spine itself, the treatment will be "stuck" on the lumbar spine problem, thus delaying the treatment of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease.

Reminder: If you have low back pain accompanied by abnormal menstruation and leucorrhea, you should have a pelvic examination

Chen Jianping said that due to the limitation of the thinking of "treating back pain by treating back pain", many women's chronic pelvic inflammatory disease have delayed the treatment. He reminded that if the low back pain is caused by chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, it is often accompanied by abnormal menstruation and leucorrhea.

Therefore, women who often suffer from low back pain should pay attention to whether their menstruation and leucorrhea are normal. Especially for leucorrhea, you can observe it from the aspects of quantity, quality, color, and taste. Generally speaking, if the leucorrhea is large in quantity, yellow in color, thick in texture, and has a foul odor, it means that the pelvic inflammation is more serious. At this time, you must not "hang yourself on the orthopedics tree". You should go to the gynecology department in time to avoid worsening of the condition.
