Is polystyrene harmful to the human body?

Is polystyrene harmful to the human body?

High-pressure polyethylene refers to a polymer converted from butadiene alone through an oxygen free radical addition polymerization reaction. It is a colorless, transparent thermosetting plastic with a wire glass transition temperature of over 100°C. Therefore, it is often used to make various disposable containers that need to withstand the temperature of boiling water, as well as disposable foam lunch boxes. So what harm does high-pressure polyethylene do to the human body?

Is high-pressure polyethylene toxic? What are the harms to the human body?

1. High-pressure polyethylene is a transparent thermosetting plastic without any color tone. With a transition temperature of over 100 degrees Celsius, wire glass is often used to make various disposable containers that need to withstand boiling water, as well as disposable foam lunch boxes.

2. When many manufacturers use PS to produce and process products, in order to improve the production and processing characteristics or product characteristics, they will add halogen-free flame retardants, anti-aging agents, antistatic agents, etc. These flame retardants are basically harmful, will dissolve and volatilize during production and processing, and are carcinogens. For example, PS containing CL at 250-400°C may contain dioxins, which are carcinogens.

3. The temperature is around 200 degrees or above to ensure the melting temperature of high-pressure polyethylene. The small molecular water substances dissolved may be harmful, and if people digest too much, they may cause cancer.

Characteristics of high pressure polyethylene

Utility grade high pressure polyethylene is a thermosetting plastic that is a solid in the form of smooth, transparent beads or granules. Density 1.04~1.09, picture quality 88%~92%, emissivity 1.59~1.60. Under the action of stress field, it causes birefringence, which is simply the stress field-electro-optical effect. The melting temperature of the product is 150~180℃, the chemical reaction temperature is 300℃, the heat deformation temperature is 70~100℃, and the normal use temperature is 60~80℃. At a temperature 5~6℃ lower than the heat deformation temperature, after annealing, the stress field can be eliminated and the heat deformation temperature can be significantly increased. If a small amount of α-methylstyrene is added during the production process, the heat resistance level of practical high-pressure polyethylene can be improved.

Application areas of high pressure polyethylene

High-pressure polyethylene is widely used in the production of electronic optical industry. It can be used to produce optical laser lenses and laser equipment because of its excellent light transmittance. It can also be made into transparent or brightly colored products, such as lamp covers and lighting equipment. High-pressure polyethylene can also be used to make many electrical components used in high-frequency office environments and in-car dashboards. Because high-pressure polyethylene is a difficult-to-degrade surface material, it is difficult to produce in industrial production and requires the use of professional high-pressure polyethylene strong glue for bonding.

High-pressure polyethylene used alone as a product has great ductility, and adding a small amount of other substances, such as butadiene, to high-pressure polyethylene can greatly reduce ductility and increase impact toughness. This type of plastic is called high-impact high-pressure polyethylene, and its processing performance is greatly improved. This plastic can be used to make many high-quality mechanical parts and concrete components.
