Is spitting often harmful to the body?

Normally, a healthy person does not spit frequently, so if you always feel phlegm in your throat, it means there is inflammation in your body. This is an alarm sent by the body and you should take it seriously and get checked as soon as possible. If you don't get checked out early, it may be too late once the condition worsens, so if you feel unwell, you should go to the hospital to see a doctor in time. Normal people have very little sputum.

Several common diseases that cause excessive sputum:

1. Chronic bronchitis is prone to coughing, wheezing, and excessive sputum when exposed to cold. If it is not cured for a long time, it may develop emphysema and cor pulmonale. When combined with bacterial infection, the sputum is yellow and sticky and the patient has fever.

  1. Pneumonia: Lobar pneumonia may cause rusty sputum and be accompanied by chills and fever.

  2. Pulmonary tuberculosis causes fever and night sweats. When lung cavities form, there is a lot of sputum. Tests can find tuberculosis bacteria, which may be accompanied by blood in the sputum.

  3. Bronchiectasis causes a large amount of sputum, which can be divided into three layers: thin, thick, and extra thick. It may also be accompanied by coughing up blood.

  4. Lung abscess produces a lot of sputum with a foul odor, accompanied by fever.

  5. The sputum of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection is green or yellow-green, sticky, and accompanied by fever.

  6. Lung cancer causes coughing up sputum that is thin or thick, sometimes with blood, and in the late stages the sputum also smells bad. In order to find out the cause of excessive sputum, you should go to the hospital for a detailed examination and actively treat the cause.

The sputum spat out by the patient is equivalent to the "culture medium" for bacteria. Thousands of pathogens can be "stationed" in a mouthful of sputum. Diseases that may be transmitted through sputum include infectious atypical pneumonia, tuberculosis, influenza, cholera, measles, etc. When someone spits everywhere, other people have the opportunity to inhale pathogenic bacteria and become infected because the pathogenic microorganisms in the sputum will evaporate into the air. When the wind blows, the pathogens of these diseases will be blown into the air. Other healthy citizens can easily become infected by breathing the air containing the pathogens. Holding phlegm and not spitting it out can also be harmful. If sputum is not discharged from the respiratory tract in time, it will provide a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to difficult exhalation and breathing, which may develop into emphysema; it can induce coughing, and repeated coughing will cause changes in the alveoli and lead to poor function; sputum also contains substances that constrict the bronchi and cause bronchospasm; the sputum of some patients is also antigenic and can trigger allergic asthma. Therefore, experts point out that if you have phlegm, you should "spit it out", but be careful not to spit anywhere. When you spit, it is best to wrap it in a tissue and throw it in the trash can.
