What causes swollen legs and feet?

Half of the patients with heart disease or some kidney diseases are more prone to swelling, and pregnant women are also prone to swelling. You can eat more diuretic foods, do some moderate leg exercises, and try to raise your legs when sleeping. Women should try not to wear high heels, don't put too many things in your bag, and try to reduce the weight.

Causes of swollen legs and feet: Most calf swelling is caused by kidney or heart disease. However, sometimes ascites caused by liver disease, nutritional imbalance caused by protein deficiency, or hormonal abnormalities caused by menopausal disorders can also cause calf swelling. Local lower limb edema is mostly caused by obstruction of the lower limb veins and lymphatic vessels, which causes body fluids to enter the tissue spaces.

Prevention of leg and foot swelling: When swelling occurs, limit the intake of water and salt; in order to excrete excess water from the body, it is best to eat more foods with diuretic effects. If the condition is serious and cannot be cured, you must see a doctor. If you want to take diuretics, you must get a doctor's diagnosis. It is best to avoid using diuretics.

What should you do if your legs and feet are swollen? To prevent and treat it, you can do the following: 1. Do not change shoes within one day. 2. Do relaxing leg exercises every day to eliminate tension and promote blood circulation. 3. Be sure to rest after long-term leg activities. You can massage or gently caress the feet. Please note that the massage or caressing must start from the feet. 4. When there is edema, use an elastic bandage or elastic stockings to protect the swollen part during the day. 5. Elevate your legs when sleeping at night. 6. Do a simple foot exercise regularly. Roll a small ball or stick between your toes while watching TV. 7. Skiing and swimming have good therapeutic effects. 8. Reduce salt and water intake. 9. After finishing housework every night, lie on your back with your legs raised high and leaning against the wall for 10 minutes. 10. Don’t carry a heavy backpack or wear high heels. 11. The doctor holds 1 to 5 fingers of the patient one by one with his hands, and then shakes 1 to 5 fingers in a circular motion one by one while stretching them, and performs a pulling and shaking technique to relax the muscle spasms.

Differential diagnosis of swollen legs and feet: 1. If the swelling starts from the face and then spreads to the whole body, there is a high possibility of kidney disease, but it may also be acute nephritis or kidney disease. 2. If swelling starts from the feet, it may be caused by heart disease, hypoproteinemia, liver cirrhosis, etc. 3. In the later stages of pregnancy, the whole body and feet are prone to edema; if the edema is severe, it may be pregnancy toxemia. If you press the above swelling with your fingers, water will move and form a depression. 4. If the area does not sink when pressed with your hand and is still swollen, it may be caused by hypothyroidism or side effects of medication. 5. The swelling caused by standing for a long time is not an abnormal phenomenon. 6. Sometimes edema may occur even without any disease. It may be caused by bruises and dislocations. In addition, excessive physical burden, second to third degree flat feet, lymphatic vessel abnormalities, long periods of walking or standing, and improper sitting posture can all cause edema: sitting on a high chair with feet not touching the ground; crossing your legs; sitting on a chair that is too low; and shoes that do not fit can also cause edema. Pregnant women and patients with varicose veins are prone to edema. The swelling will go away after you rest. When the weather is hot, swelling will worsen.
