How long does it take for a fish bone to dissolve in the throat?

Fish is a food that many people like to eat, and its nutritional value is particularly high. Eating fish regularly can promote physical health and improve body immunity. However, many fish have bones, and many people have never dared to eat fish again because of fish bones getting stuck in their throats. Once a fish bone gets stuck in the throat, it will not disappear on its own and you need to go to the hospital to remove it.

1. Will a fish bone stuck in the throat disappear on its own?

Foreign objects in the throat generally do not fall off by themselves, but if they are not very large and are not inserted very deep, there may be ulcers at the fishbone site, which may cause the fishbone to fall off. It is also said that drinking vinegar after a fish bone is stuck in your mouth can soften it. In fact, fish bones will not soften on their own, and drinking vinegar is not a good solution. Experiments have shown that fish bones and vinegar must be in contact for more than 15 minutes to soften, and it is obviously impossible for them to be in contact for such a long time in the mouth.

2. Will a fish bone stuck in the throat dissolve?

Won't.

A fish bone stuck in the throat will not dissolve by itself, and drinking vinegar is not a good solution. Experiments have shown that fish bones and vinegar must be in contact for more than 15 minutes before they can soften. After a fish bone is stuck in the throat, it is not recommended to swallow other food to prevent the fish bone from getting deeper into the throat.

If it is a small fish bone, you can usually swallow it with rice or other food. However, if it is a large fish bone or the condition is more serious, it is better to go to the hospital and ask a professional doctor to help remove it.

Note: Why doesn't drinking vinegar work for large fish bones?

Drinking vinegar does not really help soften fish bones. Vinegar can only stay at the stuck site for a short time, which not only has very limited effect, but may also delay treatment.

It is even more dangerous to swallow a fish bone by swallowing rice, steamed buns or other foods, because the fish bone may pierce the blood vessels.

3. What to do if a fish bone is stuck in your throat

1. Stay relaxed

Stay relaxed, don't be nervous, and drink plenty of water.

2. Stop eating and do not swallow rice or other foods

When a fish bone gets stuck in your throat, don't panic and don't try to push the fish bone down by swallowing rice balls in big gulps.

Hazards: A thin and soft fish bone may luckily be taken into the stomach, but a large and hard fish bone may penetrate deeper and deeper, and even puncture the esophagus or large blood vessels, causing serious consequences.

3. Lower your head and bend over to cough violently

Lower your head, bend over and cough violently, or use a chopstick to stimulate the posterior wall of the throat to induce vomiting. If the fish bone is not deeply inserted into the soft tissue, it can be squeezed out.

4. Use a flashlight to check your throat

If it still doesn't work, you can use a spoon or toothbrush handle to press down on the front part of your tongue, hold up a flashlight or small mirror, and look closely at your throat;

If you find a fishbone, you can grab it with tweezers and gently pull it out. If the person who is stuck has a sensitive pharyngeal reflex and feels nauseous and has difficulty cooperating, you can ask the person to open his mouth and make an "ah" sound to relieve discomfort.

5. Go to the hospital for treatment

If the problem is still not solved, it means that the fishbone is located deep and difficult to find. At this time, you should go to the hospital in time. The doctor uses professional instruments and it only takes 5 minutes to remove the fishbone.
