What causes epilepsy in children without a genetic history?

When we see a patient with epilepsy, our first reaction is to consider whether there is a hereditary epilepsy in the family. In fact, not all epilepsy is hereditary. Even if it occurs in children, it is a non-genetic factor. It is generally caused by these reasons, so we need to understand it clearly.

If a patient with temporal lobe epilepsy has a temporal lobe epilepsy attack while sleeping, it can be called sleep temporal lobe epilepsy. Sleep temporal lobe epilepsy is also one of the many symptoms of temporal lobe epilepsy. The treatment of epilepsy takes a lot of time, which requires the patient to persist in the treatment before seeing the effect of the treatment. Sleepy temporal lobe epilepsy mainly occurs during sleep, so some patients' families need to take preventive measures. Symptoms of sleep temporal lobe epilepsy include: sudden eye opening, waking up, or panic.

To understand the symptoms of sleep temporal lobe epilepsy, patients must first understand sleep temporal lobe epilepsy. As the name suggests, sleep temporal lobe epilepsy is temporal lobe epilepsy that occurs during sleep. Sleep is an important activating factor for clinical seizures and abnormal discharges in temporal lobe epilepsy. Clinically, any temporal lobe epileptic seizure can occur during sleep. Studies have shown that approximately 25% to 30% of temporal lobe epilepsy attacks occur primarily during sleep, and this type of temporal lobe epilepsy is commonly known as sleep temporal lobe epilepsy.

The symptoms of sleep-related temporal lobe epilepsy in children are different from those of general temporal lobe epilepsy. The symptoms of temporal lobe epilepsy in children are generally paroxysmal, accompanied by mental depression or abnormal behavior. Common symptoms of sleep-induced temporal lobe epilepsy include sudden eye opening, awakening, or panic attacks during sleep, often accompanied by dystonia or other movement disorders, and in a few cases, sleep-related aggressive behavior. Sleep-related temporal lobe epilepsy has many similarities with sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, night terrors, nightmares, and OSAS: they all occur during sleep, and the manifestations are mostly paroxysmal, and may be accompanied by lack of energy or abnormal behavior. However, the treatment principles are very different and the prognosis is also very different.

Once sleep-related temporal lobe epilepsy is diagnosed, regular anti-temporal lobe epilepsy treatment is generally required, otherwise repeated attacks may affect neuropsychiatric function. Other sleep disorders, such as night terrors and nightmares, generally do not require special treatment and are mostly self-limiting. Although some sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and OSAS (obstructive sleep apnea syndrome) require medication or device intervention, the prognosis is mostly good. Therefore, the understanding of sleep-related temporal lobe epilepsy mainly lies in the differential diagnosis from other common sleep disorders to avoid incorrect treatment.

The above content has explained to friends why temporal lobe epilepsy occurs during sleep. Friends should pay attention to temporal lobe epilepsy occurring during sleep. If you feel unwell, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Parents and friends should also pay attention to the health of children to avoid failing to detect temporal lobe epilepsy. Finally, I wish you all good health.
