Causes of lower limb edema in the elderly

The elderly will have many diseases because their bodies are in a period of gradual decline and exhaustion, and many organs in their bodies will degenerate. Some elderly people often suffer from lower limb edema, but there are many reasons for lower limb edema, and it is not caused by a single reason. So next I will introduce to you the causes of lower limb edema in the elderly.

1. Causes of edema in the elderly

1. Hypertension

Almost all elderly people with hypertension will experience calf edema. At this time, they need to eliminate the symptoms of hypertension through diet or drug intervention to relieve the edema.

2. Liver disease

When people reach a certain age, all organs of the human body will gradually age, and the liver is no exception. If combined with long-term drinking, it is more likely to induce liver disease, which can easily lead to calf edema. It is recommended that middle-aged and elderly friends do not drink alcohol frequently and eat more fruits and vegetables.

3. Malnutrition

Malnutrition can also easily lead to edema. If the elderly suffer from long-term malnutrition, it is also easy to cause calf edema. It is recommended to consume a wide range of dietary nutrition, eat more healthy whole grain foods, and scientifically combine meat and vegetables. This will enhance nutrition and relieve the symptoms of calf swelling.

4. Chronic varicose veins

Brown pigmentation in swollen legs, especially around the ankles, is usually a sign of a long-term condition called varicose veins. Brown pigmentation is caused by blood passing through blood vessel walls and entering nearby tissues.

2. Methods to eliminate edema

1. Proper exercise

Proper exercise helps the body's own metabolism and circulation. After getting up in the morning, you can do simple stretching and yoga movements on the bed or floor, focus on deep breathing with your abdomen until you sweat slightly, which can promote gastrointestinal motility and eliminate toxins in the body.

2. Stand on tiptoe from time to time

Maintain a standing posture, pay attention to tightening your abdomen and lifting your chest, then raise your hands to the sides of your body to the same width as your shoulders, with your palms facing outwards; then slowly stand on tiptoe and draw circles with your palms facing outwards. After holding this position for 5 seconds, slowly lower your heels and repeat 15-20 times.
