Hypertension Ruptured blood vessels in nose

Hypertension Ruptured blood vessels in nose

The reason why people are so afraid of high blood pressure is simply because high blood pressure brings many uncertainties to the human body. Especially in the elderly, many diseases are caused by high blood pressure, such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and cerebral hemorrhage. In addition, arteries in some parts of the body may rupture due to excessive blood pressure. So what should a person do if a blood vessel in the nose ruptures due to high blood pressure?

Autumn is a high-incidence season for nosebleeds among middle-aged and elderly people. Among them, nosebleeds caused by hypertension account for about 40% of nosebleed patients. Nosebleeds in patients with hypertension indicate unstable blood pressure, which is often a sign of stroke. When a patient with hypertension has nose bleeding, he should go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible.

Middle-aged and elderly people with a history of hypertension who often have nosebleeds should pay attention

The autumn and winter seasons are cold and dry, and the number of people suffering from nosebleeds increases. Many people do not take nosebleeds seriously. It is important to remind you that if middle-aged or elderly patients with hypertension have nosebleeds, they must measure their blood pressure, because clinically many of these nosebleeds are caused by unstable blood pressure. If they are not discovered and intervened in time, the patient’s chance of stroke may increase.

Dr. Chen, deputy chief physician of the Department of Otolaryngology, said that excluding factors such as nasal trauma, nasal mucosa, nasal tumors and systemic diseases, the causes of nosebleeds are mostly caused by hypertension. The ages of patients with nosebleeds encountered in clinical practice range from 20 to 80 years old. Most young people suffer from transient hypertensive nosebleeds due to factors such as long-term fatigue and lack of sleep, while the elderly generally suffer from hypertensive nosebleeds due to high blood pressure.

Based on the characteristics of nosebleeds and the patient's age, the cause of nosebleeds can be roughly inferred. If middle-aged and elderly people have heavy nose bleeding that is not easy to stop on its own, there is a pulsating feeling in the nose before bleeding, and they have a history of hypertension, it can be preliminarily judged that the nose bleeding is caused by hypertension.

Elderly patients with nosebleeds should not be deceived by so-called "normal blood pressure"

The normal range of blood pressure for adults is systolic pressure less than or equal to 140 mmHg, and diastolic pressure less than or equal to 90 mmHg. If an adult's systolic blood pressure is greater than or equal to 160 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure is greater than or equal to 95 mmHg, it can be determined as hypertension.

Dr. Chen emphasized that in clinical practice, patients often complain of

Elderly patients with epistaxis and a history of hypertension generally insist that their blood pressure is very normal. But the patient overlooked one issue, which is what the basal blood pressure is. Some patients often have low baseline blood pressure, or even have a history of hypotension, while others have familial hypotension. If the basal blood pressure is between 90-80/70-60 mmHg when young, and reaches 140/95 mmHg in old age, it is individual hypertension for the patient. Therefore, for an elderly patient with nosebleed, after excluding factors such as trauma, nasal mucosa, nasal tumors and systemic diseases, the first thing to consider is whether the nosebleed is caused by hypertension.

The key to treating hypertensive nosebleeds is to actively control blood pressure

Dr. Chen said that the treatment of hypertensive nosebleeds, after stopping the nose bleeding, is mainly about actively controlling blood pressure. If the blood pressure is too high, you can first take active measures to control the blood pressure and then stop the bleeding from the nose. The purpose of this is to prevent cerebral hemorrhage. The amount of bleeding caused by hypertensive nosebleeds is large and difficult to stop on its own. General measures often cannot completely stop the bleeding, and it is often necessary to use expanded hemostatic sponges, oil gauze strips, etc. to pack the nasal cavity and compress the bleeding. In addition to local treatment, antihypertensive drugs should be used to control blood pressure at an appropriate level.

In addition, Dr. Chen emphasized that hypertensive nosebleeds are preventable and controllable. Middle-aged and elderly people with a history of hypertension should pay attention to controlling their blood pressure. Especially when they are tired, lack of sleep, catch a cold, or when the temperature changes greatly, they should pay more attention to monitoring their blood pressure to prevent excessive fluctuations in blood pressure. Try to drink less liquor and smoke less. Try to avoid breath-holding movements (such as blowing a trumpet, etc.). People with constipation should seek early treatment to prevent excessive breath-holding from causing rupture of nasal blood vessels. Do not consume too many warm and dry tonic products. Use drugs with pressor effects, such as furazolidone nasal drops and epinephrine, with caution to prevent high blood pressure from causing ruptured blood vessels in the nasal cavity and bleeding.
