Uncaria rhynchophylla is an evergreen vine plant of the genus Uncaria in the Rubiaceae family. It is a climbing shrub with slender, columnar and hairless stems and branches, oval papery leaves and capitulate inflorescences.

Uncaria rhynchophylla is mainly used to treat infantile convulsions, night crying, wind caused by excessive heat, eclampsia, dizziness caused by liver yang, and headache caused by liver fire.

For the treatment of fetal movement disorder, qi and blood deficiency, wind-cold and wind-heat in pregnant women, and eclampsia: one qian each of Uncaria rhynchophylla, Panax ginseng, Chuanxiong, Poria cocos, and Viscum album, and one qian and five fen of Platycodon grandiflorum. Decoction in water.

To treat children with intestinal tract obstruction, crying with hands and feet raised, or bending the body like a shrimp: 5 fen each of Uncaria rhynchophylla, Citrus aurantium, and Corydalis yanhusuo, and 3 fen of liquorice. Boil half a cup of water and drink 20% of the decoction.

For the treatment of hypertension, dizziness, and nervous headache: take 2 to 5 qian of Uncaria rhynchophylla, decocted in water and taken orally.

To treat numbness all over the body: 7 qian each of Uncaria rhynchophylla stems and branches, black sesame powder, and Perilla frutescens leaves. Take with simmered water, three times a day.

Treatment for facial nerve paralysis: 2 liang of Uncaria rhynchophylla and 4 liang of fresh Polygonum multiflorum vine. Decoction

For treating headache, high fever and persistent nosebleed caused by typhoid fever: one liang each of Uncaria rhynchophylla, white bark of Morus alba (filed), and saltpeter, three fen each of Gardenia jasminoides and licorice (roasted), one liang each of Coptis chinensis (filed and fried), and Bupleurum chinense (remove the impurities). Coarsely pound and sieve the above seven ingredients. Take three spoonfuls of it each time, add one cup of water and Panax notoginseng leaves, boil until six parts are left, remove the residue, add one cup of Rehmannia glutinosa juice, stir, and drink it while warm after eating.

"The Ode to Medicinal Properties" says: "Uncaria rhynchophylla can produce body fluids and relieve spasms, and its function is to clear away heat, detoxify and calm liver heat." "Compendium of Materia Medica": "It can relieve dizziness and headache in adults, soothe liver wind and eliminate heart heat." Therefore, clinical medicine often uses it to treat symptoms such as dizziness and blurred vision, headache due to heat in the liver meridian, headache due to wind-cold or wind-heat, high blood pressure, and obstructed rash.

3. Stop wind and relieve pain: This product is sweet, cold in nature, and enters the heart and liver meridians. It is good at clearing the fire of the pericardium, relieving the heat of the liver meridian, stopping wind, calming the nerves and stopping convulsions. As it says in Compendium of Materia Medica: "Uncaria rhynchophylla is a medicine for the hand and foot Jueyin meridians. The foot Jueyin meridian governs wind, and the hand Jueyin meridian governs fire. Epilepsy, dizziness, and convulsions are all diseases caused by liver heat and fire. Uncaria rhynchophylla opens the pericardium and regulates the liver wood, and when the wind is calmed and the fire is extinguished, all symptoms will disappear." Therefore, it is commonly used to treat various tic diseases such as Jueyin convulsions, children's sudden fright, children's night crying, female eclampsia, and infantile convulsions.

Medicinal value

Antihypertensive effect: Uncaria rhynchophylla decoction, alcohol extract, total alkaloids of Uncaria rhynchophylla and Uncaria rhynchophylla have antihypertensive effect on anesthetized or non-anesthetized animals, normal animals or hypertensive animals, and whether administered intravenously or by gavage. And there is no rapid acceptance situation.
