Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa

The main manifestation of bulimia nervosa is uncontrolled food intake, and many complications may occur. For example, bulimia nervosa is usually accompanied by anorexia nervosa, which is an irresistible neurotic compulsion to eat for a long time. Such patients are generally more common in women, or in late adolescence or early adulthood. Many symptoms and signs of bulimia nervosa must be controlled by the patient and the patient must eat in moderation at regular times.

The main symptoms of anorexia nervosa are mainly caused by congenital genetic diseases or later diseases. There are also many other reasons that cause bulimia nervosa due to the opposite effects of controlling diet. Let us briefly introduce the symptoms and signs of anorexia nervosa.

Symptoms and signs of bulimia nervosa

(1) There is a history of binge eating, with the amount of food consumed far exceeding the normal amount, and the patient often eats until he feels uncomfortable.

(2) Immediately after binge eating, the patient takes inappropriate compensatory measures to prevent weight gain, which occurs at least twice a week on average and lasts for more than three months.

(3) In the early stages, patients feel ashamed of their binge eating behavior and often act in secret.

(4) Binge eating behavior may be triggered by the following factors: irritability, poor interpersonal relationships, feeling hungry after dieting, or dissatisfaction with weight or body shape. Binge eating can temporarily relieve irritability, but soon after, the patient will become dissatisfied with himself and depressed.

(5) At the beginning of the disease, the patient's ability to control eating behavior weakens, and in the later stages of the disease, the self-control ability is completely destroyed.

(6) The most common method of controlling weight is to induce vomiting. This can be done by stimulating the throat with hands or other instruments. Emetics can also be used to induce vomiting. After a period of time, there is no need to induce vomiting. The patient will vomit when he thinks about vomiting, even if he has only taken a small amount of food.

(7) About one-third of patients use catharsis to lose weight, and a very small number of patients even use enema.

(8) Some patients do not adopt the method of directly eliminating food, but instead increase physical energy consumption, such as fast activities, increased physical exercise, etc. The amount of activity far exceeds normal and affects the normal life.

(9) Patients attach too much importance to their physical appearance and often feel dissatisfied.

(10) May be accompanied by symptoms of depression or anxiety, most of which are related to weight or body shape.

(11) In severe cases, water and electrolyte metabolism disorders may occur, manifested as hypokalemia, hyponatremia, etc. Vomiting can lead to a decrease in gastric acid and metabolic alkali poisoning, while catharsis can lead to metabolic acidosis.

(12) In the later stages of the disease, complications such as esophageal, gastrointestinal, and cardiac complications may cause death.

The above are the symptoms and signs of anorexia nervosa. The main symptoms and signs are that patients who eat often eat more than usual, and often eat until they feel uncomfortable. Patients with eating have weak conscious control over their behavior, and their anorexia nervosa is not controlled by diet. Some patients do not adopt the method of directly clearing food but increase physical energy consumption. The large amount of activity causes bulimia nervosa. Many patients pay too much attention to their physical fitness and often feel dissatisfied, which can also cause bulimia nervosa.
