Symptoms of mumps

When we were young, many people suffered from mumps. Whenever parents see other children suffering from mumps, they will not let their children pass by because mumps is a highly contagious disease. If a child who has never had mumps comes into contact with a child who has mumps, he will be infected with mumps. But it must be mentioned that if you have had mumps before, you will have lifelong immunity and will not get it again.

So what kind of disease is mumps? In fact, the most obvious symptom of mumps is swelling of the chin, which looks similar to swollen and painful gums, but swollen and painful gums are not contagious, but mumps is highly contagious. Next, let us take a general look at what kind of disease mumps is.

What people usually call mumps in real life is actually a respiratory infectious disease known as mumps in medicine. The incubation period of mumps is 8 to 30 days, with an average of 18 days. The onset is usually acute, with no prodromal symptoms. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, sore throat, poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, body pain, etc. After a while, the parotid glands become swollen and painful, and the body temperature may reach above 39°C. Adult patients are generally more serious.

The unique symptoms of mumps are: first, the parotid gland is swollen, usually centered on the earlobe, and spreads forward, backward, and downward, in a pear-shaped shape with unclear edges; the local skin is tense, shiny but not red, tough and elastic to the touch, and painful to the touch; it usually lasts for 7-10 days, and one side often swells first for 2-3 days, and then the other side also swells, accompanied by pain and heat. The pain worsens when opening the mouth and chewing. The swelling and pain subsided after about a week. When the parotid gland is swollen, most people have a fever for 3-5 days. When the parotid gland is swollen, strict isolation is necessary. Isolation can only be lifted 3 days after the parotid swelling disappears completely.

The above are the main clinical manifestations of mumps. From them we can see that mumps is not an incurable disease. Therefore, we do not need to be afraid when we are infected with mumps. We can just receive timely treatment. Of course, because mumps is contagious, patients with mumps should avoid going to crowded places to prevent more people from being infected.
